Re: Stargate SG-1
If you want a popular show, (with Battlestar Galactica as the gold standard), make the proposed show that honors the lore and characters of the original.
If not, you’ll wind up with a turkey like Rings of Power.
Choose wisely.
Amazon cancelling Stargate because it's too fan focused is a serious mask off moment.
I mean, an actual legit one. Them admitting that so openly and not being coy is amazing in of itself. It's like what we all have been saying about these corpos messing with our favorite IPs.
Sounds like fans were actually getting a respectful entry, something nearly every other major sci-fi franchise has failed to give them in recent years. @AmazonMGMStudio should keep the documentary dead rather than making some bastardization "for modern audiences" without our boys
I started watching SG-1 at age 15. I was the first in the family to start, but one by one they all joined me. Then one day, even my Dad joined. NOTHING on television held my Dad's interest. He never went to the movies. It was the first time I'd ever connected with him in this way. Not long after he started, he came home one day with the first season DVD box set, and the whole family started watching from the beginning. He kept buying the sets, until we caught up with the currently airing show, and then we watched like clockwork as a family every Friday night, with pizza and soda.
You have to understand, that is a CRAZY thing to type out about my Dad. He never did stuff like that. He was tough to connect with about something that wasn't mechanical or construction. I can't think of a single other fun thing he did with us that wasn't what a kid would consider "chores" or "work." My siblings and I treasured those Friday nights like nothing else. It was an entirely new experience, having something like that where he would quote the lines to you in the middle of the day (Teal'c lines were his favorite, especially the infamous "undomesticated equines" line).
My Dad has been buried for almost 8 years now. My oldest two kids barely remember him and the other two never met him. We recently watched both SG-1 and Atlantis as a family. It's been an emotional ride, sharing this with them yet wishing Grandpa was around to share it with them too. My kids ADORE Stargate. My girls have crushes on Daniel Jackson and John Sheppard. My youngest son wants to BE Jack O'neill. They cried when Daniel ascended the first time. They were over the MOON at the idea of a new series in the works to enjoy. I haven't had the heart to tell them the news that the whole thing has been called off.
Save Stargate!
Amazon just proved they don't understand their own franchises.
Canceling the new Stargate series after years of development is a slap in the face to one of the most loyal fanbases in science fiction. The reported excuse that it wouldn't appeal beyond existing fans makes even less sense when the people behind the project were specifically working to bring in new viewers while respecting the universe fans have supported for nearly 30 years.
I stand with Michael Shanks and Joseph Mallozzi. These are people who helped make Stargate what it is. When they say the show was designed to welcome new audiences while honoring the franchise, I believe them over executives who seem more interested in chasing trends than creating great science fiction.
Fans wanted Stargate. Instead, Amazon gave us another lesson in how Hollywood keeps ignoring the very audience that made these franchises valuable in the first place.
Do better, Amazon.

Stargate SG-1 actor Michael Shanks is rallying fans to protest Amazon's shock cancellation of its previously-announced franchise revival. https://t.co/KccbeYMV7i
Dear @AmazonMGMStudio,
What’s the deal with cancelling Stargate because it appeals to its fanbase? Isn’t that the exact point of owning the rights to a franchise, what makes it commercially valuable?
If you want to reach another audience, create something new?
The "broad" audience that @PrimeVideo was looking for with Stargate was already in the existing fanbase. Let's take a look. Stargate fanbase demo:
- Loved by men AND women
- Loved by liberals AND conservatives
- Loved by military personnel (with real world appearances)
- Loved by folks who don't normally watch sci-fi
- Loved all around the world
- Original fans' children and now GRANDchildren are fans
???
Going by the box office this past weekend where two indie horror games absolutely destroyed Star Wars at the cinema, perhaps making something for the already BROAD audience that is the Stargate fandom is, in fact, the obvious choice. It didn't work for Star Wars, it didn't work for Star Trek, and it won't work for Stargate.
I'm not going to shut up about Stargate until a faithful iteration of this show is put back on the shelf.
It’s one means of many to get some attention to this. #stargate

I LOVE IT! The fans are amazing. 🥹Amazon was WRONG! They made a MISTAKE by discounting Stargate fans.
Keep telling Amazon how you feel and be sure to tag them! RT your fellow fans.

I’m gonna simply say this: if you are at all interested in a Stargate show with ANY of the original creators/performers involved, now is the time to say something. Otherwise it really will be the end of that chapter forever. Let them know you are THERE
Sadly, it's true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.
There's not much I can add beyond confirming what's happened. But I will say this...
Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.
As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We'll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters - or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past.
My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.
Amazon has cancelled their new Stargate series because... it was written for fans of the franchise. 🤔 Insiders say Amazon execs wanted more "broad appeal" for the revival.
Seems appealing to millions of existing fans was considered too niche. 😅
