As a bonus, this policy keeps your letters honest and factual, and helps you be upfront with students for whom you don't really want to write letters. And the best part is you keep in touch with your students later in life and see how they're doing.
My recommendation for those writing confidential academic recommendations: Plan to share your letter with the student in 10 years. I try to frame my letters to be useful for not just the university, but eventually also the student.
