Here's what 2000 years of inscriptions actually show:

Not a single inscription in pre-modern India (300 BCE-1300 CE) demonstrates a 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦.

Instead, identities looked like this:

* X, son of Y
* of Z village
* of ___ gotra
* holder of ___ title

👉 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥. 𝐋𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥.
Not fixed. Not compressed.

Even in dense inscriptions (like the 1276 Palam Baoli), you get:

✔ genealogy across generations
✔ place
✔ role
✔ political context

But still:

❌ no fixed last name
❌ no repeatable family identifier
❌ no "surname slot"

So what changed?

19th century records show chaos:

Same person → different names across documents
No consistency. No system.

Then comes bureaucracy:

📊 Census
📜 Land records
⚖️ Courts
🎓 Schools

They needed:

👉 stable
👉 repeatable
👉 searchable identities

No law forced surnames.

But systems did.

Through:

* selection
* compression
* repetition

👉 One label gets fixed
👉 Becomes "surname"

So:

The transformation of clan to surname :

Tomara - Tomar

Not ancient surnames.

👉 𝐀𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐬. 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦.

That's the difference most people miss.

The Iravatisvara Temple is one of the lesser-known architectural marvels of present day Kanchipuram, TN. Going from the architectural features, the temple is dated to the period of 700–728 CE, assignable to the reign of Narasimhavarman II Rajasimha.

Located opposite the Piravathisvara Temple at Konerikuppam, the east-facing temple consists of a sanctum and ardhamandapa, while the mahamandapa in the front is a later addition. The sanctum houses a linga and features a Somaskanda panel on the rear wall.

The walls of the temple are decorated with rampant vyala pilasters. The niches at the cardinal points feature Brahma in the north, Vishnu in the east, and Dakshinamurthi in the south. Other important depictions include Mahishasurmardhini, Ganesha, Gangadhara, and the yogic and dancing forms of Shiva.
