@bluesky grew tremendously over the last year. Recently, the platform introduced “starter packs” (SP) to help users bootstrap their social graph. Anybody can create these SPs. They’re lists of accounts (e.g., “people creating anime”) that others can then follow.

However, users also spot some things to be wary of. People flag that SPs can be used as lists of accounts to block or even harass. Some users also dislike being added to starter packs without their consent, especially when this is used to legitimize malicious SPs.

And now another twitter alternative: Looking AT the Blue Skies of Bluesky with Leonhard Balduf (Technical University of Darmstadt) & Saidu Sokoto (City, University of London)
[4/4] Leo Balduf & Saidu Sokoto show that breaking the monopoly of content moderation/recommendation works: Bluesky users create their own labels for moderation & content moderation/recommendation, however opened functionalities with greater barrier of entrance see low adoption
Twitter shows the risk of the centralised/monolithic/vertically integrated organisation approach with a benevolent dictator at the top: including the elusive nature of benevolence. 2 #IMC2024 papers examine Mastodon & Bluesky exploration of the design space of alternatives: [1/4]
Björn Scheuermann has co-authored a preprint with study on #Bluesky, a decentralised & user-driven alternative to X. Could Bluesky's model with custom feeds & community moderation set new standards? Presented soon @ACM_IMC_2024. @Gareth_Tyson@Ignactro

@IPFS is the largest decentralized file storage. In our recent @USENIXSecurity paper, we answer questions about content uploaded by users:
1) What kinds of “problematic” content is uploaded to @IPFS?
2) How is this content moderated?
3) How effective moderation is?
🧵 1/7
Finally, we showed multiple ways of circumventing the moderation techniques implemented by HTTP gateways. This includes changing the CID scheme versions, using relative paths or alternative hash functions.
