We used mosaic genetic variants as "barcodes" to answer a decades long question in dev bio: whether neural crests have fate specified before leaving the neural tube. Work done in human tissues, mice, and also quails. Findings published today in @Nature. Huge thanks to the team!
Check out our new publication at https://t.co/Cj588ZClMc on Developmental organization of sensory and sympathetic ganglia, by @HarryKiv@shishenyxx and amazing collaborators.
Congrats @SimonsFdn 2025 Fellows-to-Faculty Awardees, especially @HarryKiv from @jogleeson_ucsd lab (red). Harry was selected based on his proposal to map origins of neural crest derived neurons in #autism relevant conditions. https://t.co/Qwzgq2djsu
Check out our new resource paper @CellStemCell, where we present a brain organoid atlas of human neurodevelopmental disorders. Surprising was that nearly all patients had abnormal organoids. The challenge was aligning defects to clinical. https://t.co/0YtGTd4Dwb
#DBfeature#InMemoriam
Remembering Dr. Paul Kulesa's (1962–2025) pioneering work on neural crest development, which has profoundly impacted neuroscience & pediatric cancer. A huge loss to the DB community. His recent work on chick & mouse neural crest.

Check out our new paper in @nature https://t.co/cI3YCh7X1g. We report genetic mechanisms of neural tube defects in patients. Spina bifida is also known as meningomyelocele (MM). Prior family-based and association studies found few linked genes, so we took a different approach.

Our new study updates 50-year-old models of developmental #neuralcrest cell migration, using mosaic variant analysis in human, mouse and quail. @MelanieDWhite@HarryKiv@shishenyxx https://t.co/0vgdxsisjl
Preprint alert!
Along with other cutting-edge approaches, read how Vong et al. used ResolveOME-enabled single nucleus DNA and RNA analysis, allowing for the simultaneous identification of cell type and genotype. https://t.co/z7S3vXae3x
#WhatQuestionsWillYouAsk
Thrilled to share latest preprint studying the events prior to trunk neural crest delamination using mosaicism, CRISPR barcode and live imaging. Thx support from my postdoc mentor @jogleeson_ucsd and amazing collaboration @shishenyxx@MelanieDWhite

@biorxiv_devbio Check out our new biorxiv post focused on origins of neural crest-derived peripheral nervous system ganglia! We used mosaic variant barcode analysis to resolve clonal lineage in humans.
