Sending my love to all the families of the #77Executed this week, and although the govt in their careful planning 12 years ago to NOT include this centenary in the #DecadeOfCentenaries, and NOT to show the underbelly of the Civil War…we will always remember it.
In roughly 4 weeks from now, this October; 100 years ago, #CumaanNanGaedheal released the bodies of those they executed at the end of 1922 > early 1923.
Widows and families, waited TWO years to mourn their dead. Re-opening traumas and pain for all.

The coffins were handed back to the families during Oct 1924.
These families had no closure on their grief for two years. Many never had closure

Thankfully grandad and Dev had passed on by 1977, because the non FF families of the #77Executed would have found this gesture insulting.
FF of a certain vintage, would never of let this happen. Then again, our grandparents FF; long gone.

100 years ago today, two men who were likely known to relatives of mine were executed during the Irish Civil War. I never fully apprehended the bitterness of that time until I saw this inscription in the graveyard where some of my ancestors are buried.

No closure for the families for 2 years after the initial shock and trauma. Your relatives had no recourse in the 1920s. No answers. Nothing but unresolved grief.

Sadly, due to where poor Leo/Luke was buried after exhumation from Columb Barracks in 1924, when his remsins were brought to Keady, Co Armagh, he was buried in the middle of the night in an unmarked grave so that the B-Specials would not interfere with the grave etc...

I watched my father struggle with generational trauma; struggle with trying to investigate the family histories, trying to reconcile them. Trying to maintain the family messaging of “ dont talk about the civil war “.
