I knew the BuzzFeed @styleguide existed but I am finally reading it, and 😍! So satisfying to dive into someone's comprehensive guidelines of the best way to write/style everything. Also knowing that style guides are on Twitter convinced me to make an account. #ACESstylejam
These distinguished style guide editors at the #ACESStyleJam demonstrated that while they differ on some of the usage guidance they give, there is a remarkable level of agreement among them on the choices that contribute to clarity and grace in good writing. #ACES2019
@DragonflyEdit Also! What I failed to add: Audit the publication/site/org. See where there are inconsistencies (and any other potential problems) and make a list. Have discussions to come to logical decisions. #ACESstylejam #ACES2019
The #ACESstylejam appears to be doing to journalistic style what the Kardashians did to fashion. God help us all... 🙄
This one statement from the #ACESStyleJam could sum up most of the discussions at #ACES2019:
“This is all extraordinarily subjective.” #editors
“The updated version of Words into Type is the current Chicago Manual of Style.” — @cpyeditor #ACES2019 #ACESStylejam
A good first step in creating a new style guide: ask colleagues what style questions they get most frequently. Borrow useful content from other guides (with attribution). Build from there. @em_dash3 #ACESstylejam #ACES2019
“The great non-secret secret here is that this is all subjective.” @BCDreyer #ACESstylejam #ACES2019
The not-secret secret about editing and style: It's all subjective. @BCDreyer #ACES2019 #ACESstylejam
You learn because you listen. You learn because you’re on Twitter. @BCDreyer #ACESstylejam #ACES2019
@em_dash3 “We’re not going to change our style from one tweet... it’s about waiting for these conversations to evolve a bit.” #ACESstylejam #ACES2019
Wow, style guide superjam at #ACES2019 with editors from @APStylebook, @ChicagoManual, @nytimes, @BuzzFeed and @randomhouse! 🤪 #ACESstylejam
Thanks for the visual, @EditorTanya! I can’t see half of the panel from my seat. #ACES2019 #ACESstylejam
“All of us accept that language changes over time ... we just don’t accept the changes that happen in our time.” @PeterSokolowski #ACESstylejam #ACES2019
“Good copy editors need to remember: they are the tail, not the dog.” @BCDreyer #ACES2019 #ACESstylejam
The push and pull of language: some are saying, “Well I’m just following convention.” But someone has to set the convention. #ACESStyleJam #ACES2019
