Takeaway from #AMC2019 - at least from the perspective of my research interest - is that credible journalism outlets are increasingly involved in fact-checking work. Good start in dealing with problematic information online, but so far to go. Need to find proactive solutions too.
#amc2019 @WahyuDhyatmika on navigating digital disruption - says Tempo is moving from gatekeeper (due to dwindling influence) to factchecker. Bit sad for journalism, especially his comment about how they are moving from setting agenda to connecting people to information.
#amc2019 @altnews has an app where you can upload an image and if it has been fact checked, will tell you story behind the image. @free_thinker says platforms like Facebook and Twitter should be creating tools like these. (But as earlier session have shown, not to their benefit)
Misinformation not just online in India, mainstream media also using images to highlight issues in different context (one example was a picture that originated in China). @free_thinker described mainstream media as “abysmal" #AMC2019
In India, Facebook pages are sold based on high number of likes - cost per likes. Examples show 0.7 cents to 0.12 cents per like. Then names are changed and content - example, pro-gov’t - shared to big audiences. Often original page are fan pages - @free_thinker #AMC2019
