The #ASVS project at @OWASP started as a tightly-focused, opinionated standard built by a handful of passionate experts. Over the past decade, it has grown significantly both in scope and in the number of contributors. Today, ASVS 5.0 represents a deep and comprehensive verification standard, thanks to the incredible work of a large community. That said, as ASVS has matured, it has understandably leaned more toward the needs of security testers and auditors. From my perspective, and based on feedback from many developers and customers I work with, the standard has become harder to apply directly to secure coding tasks. To help bridge that gap, I’ve created a developer-centric fork of ASVS 5, focused on clear, opinionated, and actionable guidance that software engineers can use directly. I’ll be releasing it on my personal GitHub later this year. This effort is not a criticism of ASVS, which I’m proud to help lead. It’s an acknowledgment that different audiences have different needs, and this fork is my contribution to better serving the developer community.
