This is a good try, and I’m not against the idea. However, as I commented before, it looks primarily like political showmanship that may encourage other politicians to mimic it as well. Property taxes in the US are local taxes, not collected by the state or the federal government. I hope the Supreme Court will uphold localities’ rights to levy them. Let’s face it: local schools, police, libraries, parks, and similar services have to be funded somehow. If they are not paid for by property taxes, the money must come either from privatization or from higher state and federal taxes. Are there any realistic alternatives? Of course, we could abolish these services entirely — but how many people would seriously support that? If these services are privatized, consider a young or middle-aged family with children about to start school. They would suddenly face full private school tuition, while the property taxes they paid for years would provide no benefit. Would that be fair? If instead these services are fully state-ized or federalized, that would be the death of the Republic as we know it.
