If there is no fourth official, the #assistantreferee (AR) moves to the halfway line to assist with the substitution procedure. The #referee must wait until the AR is back in position before restarting play.

Once an #assistantreferee (AR) has been told (by the team official or fourth official) that a substitution is requested, the AR signals this to the #referee at the next stoppage usually raising the flag above the head and holding it with both hands.
In counter-attack situations, the #assistantreferee should be able to give information such as:
➡️ whether or not a foul has been committed
➡️ whether a foul was committed inside or outside the penalty area
➡️ what disciplinary action should be taken
When a foul is committed by a defending player inside the penalty area out of the referee’s vision, especially if near to the #assistantreferee, the AR should first make eye contact with the referee to see:
➡️ where the referee is positioned
➡️ what action has been taken
CONSULTATION
When dealing with disciplinary issues, eye contact and a discreet hand signal from the #assistantreferee to the referee may be sufficient.
When direct consultation is required, the AR may advance 2–3 m onto the field of play if necessary. The referee and AR should both face the field to observe the players.
