🩷 Why are pink diamonds pink?
Unlike other fancy colored diamonds, pink diamonds don’t get their color from trace elements like nitrogen or #boron.
Instead, their hue is the result of a rare and fascinating geological “defect” in the crystal lattice.
During their formation deep within the Earth, intense pressure and heat can cause plastic deformation in the diamond’s atomic structure.
This distortion alters the way light passes through the crystal, selectively absorbing certain wavelengths and reflecting pink tones.
The more intense the deformation, the stronger the pink color can appear from faint blush to vivid magenta.
Because this process is extremely rare and requires very specific geological conditions, natural pink diamonds are among the scarcest gemstones on Earth.
Most famous sources, like #Australia’s #Argyle mine, produced only a tiny fraction of pink diamonds before its closure, further increasing their rarity and value.
