Top Tweets for #BatABC
A PSA:
Don't be like me & only realize at the END of #BatABC that you can enter a single letter in the search bar of https://t.co/Mn3DKQLuLq that will auto-fill anything starting with that letter
Don't spend hours clicking through each genus's page like Nate did

X day in #BatABC gives us the only bat (a recently discovered one at that) with a genus beginning with the letter
Xeronycteris vieirai
Vieira's long-tongued bat was only discovered and described in 2005. It's not dangling a worm from its mouth in this photo: that's its tongue!

W day in #BatABC & once again I am up against a "no genus starts with that letter" situation, so
Megaloglossus woermanni
M. woermanni is called the Afican long-tonged fruit bat. As its elongated snoot hints at, this bat has a really long tongue for its size: 30mm!

V day in #BatABC
Vespadelus vulturnus
The Little forest bat is a species of Vesper bat found in the southeastern Australia, including Tasmania, and is sometimes referred to as Australia’s smallest mammal (with one other bat species that is possibly smaller)

Uroderma bilobatum was cute as heck „bycatch“ during our recent #panama field trip for #Molossus molossus @matavca @Luisa_fgf @GiveBatsABreak #BatABC note the cool bat tshirt in the background - they are sold by the Page lab to raise money for Latin American students

U day in #BatABC only has one genus option with 5 species, so I’ve chosen:
Uroderma bilobatum
This is the Common tent-making bat! It makes tents. Not the REI kind. No, it constructs tents of the leafy variety and it looks mighty proud of it too

so much more to say! did you know they turn over their body fat superfast (you wish) and compensate for that with regularly cutting their heart rate in half to save energy? https://t.co/1w0FnhFAjR @teague_o #BatABC @GiveBatsABreak

ok I had great S and T bats for #BatABC but there was just too much going on. To make up for it, here‘s a Phyllostomus hastatus loving his grasshopper #Phastbats @mc_calderonc @matavca
T day in #BatABC
Thainycteris torquatus
Unlike yesterday's bat, this has THE PERFECTEST common name: the ✨Necklace sprite✨ [!!!!!!]
There are two species in this genus. This one is found in Taiwan, the other in Indochina.

S day in #BatABC check out this beaut
Scotophilus nux, the Nut-coloured yellow bat. Caught in the lowland forests of Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary in 🇳🇬
This ‘nutty’ bat won’t give allergies, just tons of pest control services.
@GiveBatsABreak @IroroTanshi @benrousette

S day in #BatABC
Scotoecus albofuscus
This is Thomas' house bat. I don't know Thomas and no offense to him but GOLLY that's a boring name. They're also called the Light-winged lesser house bat which is more descriptive, as you'll see, but still bland

S for Scotonycteris zenkeri #BatABC. Spot the pup under mum's wing? These cute fur balls are one of the very very few fruit bats that forage in the Afrotropical forest understory. This pair was captured/released in @CrossRiver Nat. Park in 🇳🇬 @GiveBatsABreak @smaconbats

On R #BatABC we TBT to this video of a Rousettus agyptiacus (Egyptian Fruit bat) being released by SMACON Director @benrousette
R day in #BatABC is a beaut
Rhynchonycteris naso
The Proboscis bat is so-named because of it's schnozz, especially conspicuous from it's side profile, and it has every right to parade it prominently. I will accept no sniffer slander from anyone.

1/3 Rrrrrrousettus aegyptiacus for #BatABC - I am in Cyprus now (yes you may be jealous), giving a talk and chatting about tagging them. So here‘s some #Rousettus magic for y‘all @GiveBatsABreak @DinaDechmann @eidolonnetwork
"Q" bats #BatABC
There are none! So, in its place, how about the bats of Qatar?
FOUR species listed for Qatar: Trident Bat (Asellia tridens), Sind Serotine Bat (Rhyneptesicus nasutus), Desert Long-eared Bat (Otonycteris hemprichii) & Naked-rumped Tomb Bat (Taphozous nudiventris)

Q day in #BatABC & I'm gonna have to cheat
Pteronotus quadridens
P. quadridens has a common name I can relate to: Sooty mustached bat
Why is their upper lip so dirty? Well, they roost exclusively in caves where there's limited indoor plumbing. Duh.
©Joaquín Ugarte

no Q for #BatABC for me, but I will be doing R straight from the field, ok? @GiveBatsABreak here‘s a sunset for now 😂

Brought to you by the letter "P" #BatABC
Parastrellus hesperus, the Canyon Bat. The only sp of its genus. Detected in British Columbia acoustically but never captured. Only 3-6 grams, this tiny bat is an early evening flyer; easily buffeted by winds, hangs out in rocky habitats!

1/5 BatAB...P? Oh yes, I have one of course: the one and only Phyllostomus hastatus, also called #Phastbat! Since I read the studies about them by Jerry Wilkinson, Gary McCracken (some of the ultimate bat silverbacks) and their students I have been hooked! #BatABC @DinaDechmann
