There are concerns about the breeding success rate of #BlueCranes in the #Overberg and #Swartland.
New research by @TheEWT's Christie Craig estimates a success rate of 0.54 fledglings per Blue Crane pair in the Overberg. and 0.49 fledglings per pair in the Swartland.
#BlueCranes are nesting in the #Overberg, and we can lend a hand 🐣 Thirsty chicks are drawn to water troughs in the #summer. Place a brick/stone inside to help them climb out if they fall in. Also keep farm gates open where possible to minimise the risk of entanglement.
It's that time of year when #BlueCranes start pairing off. Blue Cranes pair for life, and as part of the ritual, you may well see them doing their mating dance on our Overberg fields. The pairs will then head off on their own to look for a nesting site on the dry lands.
With #winter upon us, food is scarce for our precious #BlueCranes. They tend to gather in over-wintering groups of up to 300 birds and can be seen foraging in old farm lands. We ask farmers to please be patient when you encounter them feeding on spilled grain. @SANBI_ZA
It's not unusual to burn stubble lands in the #Overberg at this time of year. So we ask our Overberg #farmers to check those lands before lighting the match, to give #BlueCranes and their chicks a chance to move away from any danger first. @OverbergFPA
