Thanks for reminding us of the #BookOfWhy, which keeps propagating the ideas of Causal AI, a 2nd Edition of which is coming up October 20th. It knows no rest: https://t.co/AaEgA8VZvr
Dr Judea Pearl!! This is a remarkable achievement that underscores a profound dedication to scholarship, the cultivation of emerging minds, and a steadfast commitment to excellence.
"Dr. Judea Pearl Surpasses 150,000 Citations, Highlighting His Lasting Impact on AI and the Data Sciences
Dec 12, 2024
This achievement reflects the lasting influence of Dr. Pearl’s contributions to artificial intelligence and the data sciences.
Because they reveal the significance of his contributions beyond the publication numbers into the research community and society at large, citation counts provide a meaningful measure of the real-world impact of academic work. Notably, over one-third of Dr. Pearl’s citations have occurred in the past five years, highlighting—>years. This highlights the continued relevance of his pioneering contributions to causal artificial intelligence, for which garnered/earned him the 2\011 Turing Award, widely considered the Nobel Prize of Computer Science.
Pearl’s contributions focused on two main areas in artificial intelligence research. First, methods of teaching machines to reason with uncertainty and, second, methods of teaching machines to reason with cause and effect relations, estimate the effect of actions, and generate explanations to surprising results. One reason for the popularity of these contributions is their general applicability across data-sensitive disciplines, including medicine, healthcare, economics, social sciences and more. Pearl’s 2019 book “The Book of Why” has been another driving factor. Written for a general audience, it has been translated into 15 languages, including Hebrew and Turkish.
Reflecting on this milestone, Dr. Pearl said, “I think the UCLA community and alumni would be pleased to know that the fundamental ideas behind the current explosion in AI applications were pioneered here at UCLA, and that these ideas are still driving and propelling current progress in AI.”
Dr. Pearl’s groundbreaking work continues to shape the field of AI, inspiring researchers and practitioners worldwide while cementing UCLA’s reputation as a hub of innovation in the data sciences."
Dr Pearl's CV is extraordinary!
While living with care, compassion and heart.
Mazal tov!
Adding to these two books, I am happy to share the table of books that was on display at my 90th birthday. Enjoy: https://t.co/BtLWKlxC7g
FYI, the second edition of #Bookofwhy should be out September 20th, 2026.

On a second thought, Ed Miliband should first read the #BookofWhy. How else can we explain a seasoned diplomat like him not grasping that rushing to declare a two-state solution, without attending to the primary obstacle-- Palestinianism -- will only make this desirable solution less likely to happen, for it tells Palestinians: "try again, and again, more forcefully each try, for we will never ask you to reconcile to Israel's existence; we will act as though you are not infected with Zionophobia." @EinatWilf @GadSaad @AkaLazarus @MelanieLatest @HenMazzig
Having listened to Ed Miliband’s speech yesterday, I'm convinced that had he read 'Coexistence,' he would understand that rushing into a two-state solution while ignoring its primary obstacle only makes that desirable solution less likely. Here is his speech:

I don't see why this issue (Gene-->IQ) is any different than the Smoking --> Cancer dilemma that occupied the health-care community in the 1960's. It can of course be resolved by scientific methods, but it must be done right, as described in #Bookofwhy.
@BretWeinstein @yudapearl has a lot to add to this discussion. If the causal mode genes -> iq is wrong what does the causal model look like? And for sure both sides have more complex causal models than my toy example, but show the diagrams as Dr. Pearl has taught us to do.
I am genuinely curious: How many of the 12,000 scientists currently employed by the FDA have read the #Bookofwhy, or a chapter in it? @DrBobGoldberg @PeterPitts

This debate is about an attempt to obscure the teachings of David Hume (1739 and 1748). Frankly, I am not aware of a clearer, more accurate and complete account of Hume than the one given in Chapter 8 of the #Bookofwhy, p. 262. See https://t.co/M2FrbMJodk and judge for yourself. @KalkhovenJudd
@yudapearl This debate needs your input!! https://t.co/EjFfTnwwwa
Yes, I truly believe that AI will enable us to solve humanity moral divides. Why? Because we already have a calculus of "narratives". See Preface to 2nd edition of #Bookofwhy: https://t.co/G5F60cY788
@yudapearl Do you think that AI in the future, maybe a 100 years, could help in solving humanity's moral divides and prejudicic practices? Including hate, discriminations and other "phobias" ?
@PatientStormDoc Bradford Hill also evaded this question and replaced it with heuristic rules about what seems to be working in practice. See #BookofWhy p.179.
@DavidSuissaJJ I believe the #Bookofwhy is what you are looking for. See https://t.co/gh1T9OUlKV for splash, reviews and synopsis. Sadly, our politicians were not in attendance.
That nations in the 21st century are ready to go to war of history only confirms the conclusion of #Bookofwhy, that the "Why" is more important than the "What". See https://t.co/G5F60cY788
BREAKING: Israel’s government votes unanimously to recognize the Armenian Genocide. Turkey is furious.
1.5 million systemically murdered for who they were, and denied ever since.
A genocide.
It’s never too late to tell the truth.

Could Robots be Jewish?
I have attempted to answer this question in 2018, when interviewed about my #Bookofwhy, see https://t.co/JJHbPfGO5J
I haven't changed my answer since.
I'll be interviewed on @MomentMagazine about:
Robots Who Pray and Other Pressing Jewish Questions of Our Time
Thursday, June 4 at 1pm, ET / 10am, PT
A wide-ranging conversation about my new book, Coexistence and Other Fighting Words: Other topics include: Can an atheist still find meaning in Jewish practice? Why do rituals and tradition continue to matter in a technological age? And if artificial intelligence becomes more human-like, might robots one day adopt rituals of their own? We will also address Zionophobia, Jewish identity, ethics, technology, and the future of coexistence in an increasingly polarized world. In conversation with Moment Editor-in-Chief Nadine Epstein.
Time to tally our harvest of new papers in causal inference. We find it in two installments

I see 465 replies to the question "what does imply causation", and I am wondering: Why is it still a question? Is the answer provided by modern causal analysis incomplete? IOW, Is there a situation where this question is not given a definitive answer?
@2Philosophical_ #bookofwhy @smueller
“Correlation doesn’t imply causation!”
Okay, then what does imply causation?
I'm glad we are having a serious discussion about the nature of "world models", in which my earlier reply read: https://t.co/s5yCyrPUPK. I am complimenting it with a discussion in the preface of the 2nd Edition of #Bookofwhy (forthcoming), in which the pertinent paragraphs read: (1) We humans cannot function without a world model because we cannot store the answers to all possible queries and look them up when needed. Instead, we store a parsimonious model of the world and derive the requested answers from the model. Possibly an organism with a gigantic memory may not need to resort to such tricks. Or possibly, it is our human bias toward causal explanations that makes us confuse ersatz causal reasoning with the real thing. (2)This book is replete with examples where different models of the world led scientists to different decisions, some beneficial and some misguided. Most of these examples focus on medical decision making. But to conclude this Preface, I want to emphasize the universality of the concept of “narrative,” and my realization that the mathematical machinery developed in the book constitutes a “mathematization of narratives,” not merely of counterfactuals, including narratives involving multiagents motivated by intricate webs of intentions and desires. The mathematical machinery can therefore be used to manage and understand the dynamics of narratives, their formation, mutation, propagation and implications, in a variety of fields. More importantly, the mathematization of narratives allows us to identify the testable implications of each narrative, to search systematically for evidence that would anchor beliefs to reality, and to explore tipping points where non-conforming evidence overturns a prevailing narrative, giving rise to a paradigm shift.
Our world models are action conditioned, and hence causal.
The concept of world model for planning goes back to the 1950s in optimal control (before I was born).
I didn't just discover it.
But training action-conditioned world models from sensory inputs (like video) requires new techniques.
Gee, for a split second I thought this post came from @MKhamenei_ir, our Supreme Leader . Wow, how I would have loved to go over the pages of #Bookofwhy with him, especially over the "Paradoxes Galore" chapter, where I show that even great minds can fall for false but wishful beliefs, say that malaria comes from "Mal Air" or, in his case, that Israel can be eliminated. It's a good read, your Holiness. @BarbaraRKay @zoecabina
I would be glad to include Lynn's paradox in #Bookofwhy if I only understood it. Simpson's paradox can easily be explained to high school students, and evokes immediate surprise. Can we do the same with Lynn's paradox?
Which Paradox explains decades of sequential RCT reversal and is correctable by causal modeling? (Hint: it’s not Simpson or Berkson). @yudapearl
Ans:
In standard cause-agnostic randomized trials (CARs), enrolling a synthetic syndrome, the treatment effect observed in the trial can be expressed as:
ATE_t = Σ_i w_{i,t} τ_i
where
i = underlying causal disease
w_{i,t} = proportion of disease i in trial t
τ_i = treatment effect for disease i.
If the disease mixture differs across trials, the weighted average treatment effect can change sign:
Σ_i w_{i,1} τ_i > 0
Σ_i w_{i,2} τ_i < 0.
Sequential trials can therefore produce opposite conclusions even when the treatment effects within each disease remain constant. This is “Lynn’s Paradox”.
Should be in “Book of Why II” (Call the paradox what you will. I’m just seeking reform.)
Grateful for National Geographic for spreading causal understanding to toddlers, through this colorful #BookofWhy:

@yudapearl Would you recommend the Book of Why for a layperson whose background in math is rough? ADHD made and still makes doing the actual mechanics of math difficult, but concepts and asking me to visualize what is happening? That I can do!
#Bookofwhy can replace #2.
