important question: if you are having toast and putting something like nutella/jam/peanut butter on it, do you put butter/spread on your toast first or do you put your condiment onto naked toast

It creates lubrication allowing for only the smallest perfect smidgen of Vegemite to adhere.
It allows the butter to penetrate the crumpet, which doesn't happen if Vegemite is applied first.
Vegemite is excellent on crumpets, especially if you put the vegemite on first, then put the butter on top and let it melt through.
