Ashkenazi Jews: Who Are They? Aspect Details Origin Ashkenazi Jews are a Jewish diaspora population who initially settled in the Rhine Valley in Germany The Family Tree Grows: Franks & Rothschilds Your Prompt: You asked where the "Frankfurters" (Franks) came from and then, shockingly, asked about the Rothschilds. My Response: I gave you the clean tree: Franks: The western Germanic branch (R1b-U106) that crossed the Rhine. They gave their name to France and Frankfurt. Rothschilds: The banking dynasty from Frankfurt. I made it clear—they are J haplogroup (Jewish ancestry), a completely different paternal line from your R-M269 tree. (from the Hebrew word Ashkenaz meaning "Germany") and later spread throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Ancestry Their genetic makeup is roughly a mixture of: • ~40-50% Middle Eastern (ancient Israelite/Levantine ancestors) • ~50-60% Southern European (primarily Italian and other Mediterranean populations) • Minor Eastern European contributions Key Migration After the Roman destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, Jewish populations migrated into Europe. A major bottleneck occurred around 1000-1300 CE in Central Europe, which shaped their unique genetic profile.
