Pleased to join #CCDAXIV, we looked at what carbon markets currently deliver for Africa, evaluated the structural risks of over-exporting carbon assets, and outlined how domestic carbon pricing and regional integration can safeguard African competitiveness
This is why #CCDAXIV matters.
We must consolidate Africa’s position and strategy for COP31, while defining what Africa wants COP32 to deliver politically, economically, ecologically and for our people.
Day One of #CCDAXIV in Addis Ababa was a reminder: Africa does not lack climate commitments, what we lack is delivery and accountability.
In my intervention, I challenged us to ask: What have previous COPs delivered for Africa & what must we do differently going into COP31?
.@mithika_mwenda (PACJA) told #CCDAXIV the Addis Ababa Declaration must move "from declaration to delivery," and that Africa must enter COP31 knowing what's non-negotiable.
This conference "asks us to move beyond the question of what Africa should seek from COP31... to what Africa should propose to the world." AUC Commissioner @MosesVilakati opened #CCDAXIV by setting Africa's agenda, not just its asks.
"Vulnerability is not the full African story." Afreximbank's Olubunmi Obasanjo-Williams told #CCDAXIV the bank will direct 5% of long-term loans to climate finance by 2030, 70% to adaptation, pointing to the $3B DRC-Zambia battery value chain as proof of concept.
”Africa is not merely a victim of climate change. We are a source of solutions." At #CCDAXIV, AfDB's James Kinyangi noted Africa holds 60% of the world's solar potential, and that the Bank's Climate Action Window has mobilized $450.9M for 37 low-income countries.

At the 14th Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (#CCDAXIV) in Addis, I emphasized that Africa’s challenge is no longer about generating more climate declarations.
The real test is whether these commitments are translated into finance, and measurable results.
