🔎 In this strategic reflection, the author highlights a critical reality:
at a time of growing nuclear risks and accelerating arms competition, the credibility of the global non-proliferation regime increasingly depends not on treating the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as competing frameworks, but on finding ways for them to work together in a mutually reinforcing manner.
⚖️ The key challenge today is to strengthen complementarity between these international instruments in order to reinforce the global architecture of:
✅ nuclear disarmament;
✅ arms control;
✅ non-proliferation;
✅ international peace and security.
🌐 This contribution is part of broader efforts to promote multilateral cooperation, strategic stability, and a more secure world free from the threat of nuclear weapons.
📖 We invite you to read and share this important academic and strategic contribution.

Honored to represent #CRIDS at the regional HCoC seminar in Southern Africa! 🌍 Inspiring discussions on rejecting ballistic militarization in Southern Africa, while defending #multilateralism and the spirit of the #PelindabaTreaty.
🌍 Last week, #CRIDS participated 🇿🇦 in the regional seminar: “MISSILE PROLIFERATION: WHAT ROLE FOR CONFIDENCE-BUILDING MEASURES SUCH AS THE HCOC?”, organized by the @FRS_org | Foundation for Strategic Research and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (#DIRCO), with the support of the #EuropeanUnion 🇪🇺, in collaboration with the Verification Research, Training and Information Centre (#VERTIC).
A huge thank you to the organizers Alexandre Houdayer, Emmanuelle Maitre, and Miguel Ángel García Carrasco for their professionalism and exemplary commitment!
CRIDS contributed as a panel member through its Executive Director, Mr. @SimsNono, disarmament expert, demonstrating that in a context of rising tensions between major powers and weakening arms control regimes, Southern Africa firmly rejects ballistic militarization 🛡️ and champions multilateralism as the cornerstone of regional security .
#SADC member states prioritize human development, regional integration, and economic stability over offensive missile capabilities a vision fully aligned with the spirit of the #PelindabaTreaty ✍️☮️.
We highlighted:
✔️ Achievements (international commitments, strengthening national controls, debates on emerging technologies)
✔️ Persistent challenges requiring collective strategic resilience.
We advocated for greater African ownership of instruments such as the #HCoC as tools for transparency and prevention, frameworks for integrating new technologies, and platforms enabling Africa to have a strong voice in missile non-proliferation .
🛩️ A seminar highlight: the inaugural visit to the South African Air Force Museum to examine the RSA-3, the last remnant of the dismantled ballistic program. Professor André Buys provided a detailed presentation of its nuclear history, dismantling process (a global reference), repurposing at Overberg, and the abandonment of the space program an outstanding demonstration of transparency and strong commitment to confidence-building .
CRIDS returns inspired, motivated, and strengthened in its commitment to a safer, more integrated Africa, fully engaged in non-proliferation.

4. This is why #CRIDS, as a member organisation and partner of @nuclearban, encourages this initiative that promotes the #TPNW and further strengthens Africa's common position on nuclear disarmament.
