⚙️ Turning commitments into effective implementation: the EU at #CSP12 of the #ArmsTradeTreaty
At the 12th Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), taking place in Geneva from 24 to 28 August, the European Union is contributing to discussions on how to address persistent challenges in the implementation of the Treaty.
Effective implementation is central to giving new impetus to the ATT. In its statement, the EU highlighted several areas where concrete progress can be made, drawing in particular on its own experience in developing common standards and national control systems.
Among the priorities raised were stronger regulation of arms brokering, comprehensive and compatible national control lists, forward-looking and evidence-based risk assessments, and greater cooperation and information-sharing among States Parties.
The EU also supported continued work on the role of industry in responsible arms transfers, including possible voluntary guidance on human rights and international humanitarian law due diligence, as well as further work on gender-based violence and inter-agency cooperation.
These discussions will also contribute to the broader effort to strengthen the ATT and make its objectives achievable through expertise, cooperation and sustained commitment from States Parties.

🇪🇺 The European Union at the 12th Conference of States Parties to the Arms Trade Treaty #CSP12
Taking place in Geneva from 24 to 28 August, the Conference provides an opportunity for the EU - which has supported the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) since its adoption - to contribute to the General Debate and thematic discussions on effective implementation, transparency and reporting, and universalisation.
🌍 During the General Debate, the EU reaffirmed its unwavering support for the ATT and its core objectives: establishing the highest possible common international standards for regulating the trade in conventional arms, eradicating illicit trade and preventing arms diversion.
Twelve years after its entry into force, the Treaty now brings together 118 States Parties. Against the backdrop of ongoing armed conflicts and the risks posed by illicit arms transfers and diversion, the EU stressed the importance of States Parties leading by example and effectively fulfilling their commitments.
Looking ahead, the EU also highlighted the opportunity for States Parties to give new impetus to the Treaty through the five-year Strategy to be adopted in 2027. According to the EU, the Strategy should combine realistic and achievable objectives with stronger commitment, expertise, funding and accountability for progress.
