We returned to check on the Cat and Fiddle in the Peak District to find it closed, yet alive and well. This pub/distillery, is classed as the second highest in the UK. Historically, it was a vital, often life saving shelter for horse-drawn carriage travelers, walkers, and traders travelling through the unforgiving, hilly terrain.
To this day, it still has to close if the weather becomes too dangerous. Just as it did centuries ago, the roads can become so covered in snow and frost that we're reminded of it's original purpose. When the weather turned, this is a place that people may have had to spend days or longer. But, you'd much rather be cooped up in there than to face the conditions outside.
This pub is a reminder of what many pubs actually existed to do. Yes, they're all important for their own reasons, but some pubs really did exist to save lives instead of simply offer a place to drink, rest, or socialise.
