I always end #ChicagoIntroIR with a lecture on existential threats to humanity

This week in #ChicagoIntroIR2019, we're wrapping up the course's core material by thinking about "human extinction" -- a light and low key topic π
What are we reading to help us think about extinction?

@EvansRyan202 @JarrodNHayes @mchorowitz @shifrinson @KennethMcDonagh @SevaUT It is amazing! Definitely going into #ChicagoIntroIR!!
But also highlights why @tiktok_us is probably beyond my skill-set :)
@avivajazz Saluti, please find the unroll here: @ProfPaulPoast: @BillGates's recommendations are sound but underscore a point I raise in #ChicagoIntroIR: "You can'tβ¦ https://t.co/Me0JOHivb4 Share this if you think it's interesting. π€
@BillGates's recommendations are sound but underscore a point I raise in #ChicagoIntroIR:
"You can't `tech' your way out of threats to humanity; they ultimately require political action"
Such `Political action' is, well, hard (h/t @dandrezner)

What can International Relations theory tell us about the global response to #COVID19?
This new slide for #ChicagoIntroIR offers a summary (w/ a little help from @realDonaldTrump)

Need discussion questions, perhaps for breakout @zoom_us sessions?
This thread has my favorite "Discussion Questions" from my >150 student #ChicagoIntroIR course.
I use these to break up my in-person lecture & encourage critical engagement w/ the ideas presented in lecture.
I want to believe this, but then I think:
1) is stopping pandemics actually an "easier" problem?π€
2) it would require massive & sustained cooperation & coordination on a global scale. As my #ChicagoIntroIR students learn, achieving even lesser cooperation is, well, "difficult"
Here's an optimistic thought. After 9/11, we spent trillions of dollars trying to stop terrorism. After this public health crisis, we'll likely spend a fortune on a problem that is easier to solve. If we do, this may well be the last pandemic the world ever sees.
@thoatley @ISQ_Jrnl @whinecough @sarahbauerle I show it to my #ChicagoIntroIR students. They love how the Cayman Islands is also a prominent node!
@erinkaylockwood @whinecough @sarahbauerle May I see the materials too? We discuss Bretton Woods quite a bit in #ChicagoIntroIR and the students love policy simulations. This could be a great fit!
These are amazing guidelines!
I have #ChicagoIntroIR students write policy memos for their @CFR_Academic model UNSC. I think I've found a new template!
Why do IR scholars study Civil Wars? Because they are often caused by and ended by external actors.
Read π. Super well deserved award! Such an important paper that forms the basis for my #ChicagoIntroIR lecture on rebellions and civil wars.
Civil wars end the way external actors think they ought to end. Thank you, @AlexMStark @ISSS_ISA @MorganLKaplan @Journal_IS @GUGovt @Georgetown and Sean Lynn Jones
Great question! We covered a variety of definitions for "International/World Order" in #ChicagoIntroIR.
[MINI-THREAD]
In response to @shifrinson, I shared the definitions of "international order" used in #ChicagoIntroIR (including my preferred definition by @SlaughterAM)
Here, I'll highlight some work specifically focused on defining international order (and why defining it is tricky)

@profmusgrave Agree!
#ChicagoIntroIR has no assigned book.
Just articles, blog posts, and some chapters.
Nothing for the students to buy.
Great question! We covered a variety of definitions for "International/World Order" in #ChicagoIntroIR.
[MINI-THREAD]
This suggests that I should probably elaborate on this point in an upcoming thread (based, in part, on #ChicagoIntroIR material)
Consider my favorite passage from Tate, which I share with #ChicagoIntroIR students -- it expresses an idea that Waltzs & Mearsheimers of IR would recognize
