As the world’s largest bicycle production and export country, China is home to over 200 million bicycles. With the country becoming more committed to going green, the old-schooled way of travel like cycling has taken the limelight once more, becoming increasingly popular with nearly one-third of urban commutes made by bike in 2023.
China has also remained as the world’s largest automobile producer and exporter for 14 consecutive years. As the automobile industry is turning to be eco-friendlier, the country has also begun to embrace new energy vehicles (NEVs) and thus becoming the largest market globally. In July, China’s domestic NEV retail sales outnumbered conventional internal combustion engine vehicles for the first time.
In terms of interregional travelers, China proudly presents the world’s largest high-speed railway network that connects 96% of cities with a population of over 500,000, while it also boasts the world’s fastest train speed of 350km/h for commercial operation.
As for a more relaxing way of travel, cruise ships in the country saw about 500,000 passengers in the first half of 2024. Over 20 cruise ships are now operating in Chinese ports, including the country’s first domestically built large cruise ship, Adora Magic City, which started commercial voyages at the beginning of this year.
In the field of aviation transport, China has now 4,335 transport aircraft and 262 transport airports, with a total airport capacity of 1.6 billion passengers. Moving beyond ground transportation, China is now actively promoting low-altitude flights, with a growing number of flying taxis seen buzzing above Chinese cities, as the country defined the low-altitude economy as a strategic emerging industry during its annual central economic work conference held in 2023.

As one of China's most open and economically vibrant regions, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (#GBA) has played a significant strategic role in the country’s high-quality economic development over the past five years. #ChinaInsight #PRC75thAnniv
In 2019, China unveiled the ambitious development plan for GBA that consists of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macao Special Administrative Region, as well as nine cities in Guangdong Province -- Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing.
The region’s total economic output exceeded 14 trillion yuan (about 2 trillion U.S. dollars) in 2023, achieving one-ninth of China's total with even just less than 0.6 percent of the national territorial area. This marks a significant increase from 10.8 trillion yuan in 2018, reflecting a robust growth of 3.2 trillion yuan.
The GBA’s development came amid an enhanced transportation network that fosters economic connectivity and cultural exchange. The region now boasts over 4,500 kilometers of operational expressways and houses several infrastructure mega projects, including the world’s longest bridge-and-tunnel sea crossing—the 55-kilometer Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge which opened in October 2018—and the 24-kilometer Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link which opened on June 30.

On July 12, 2023, China successfully launched Zhuque-2 developed by a private company, the world’s first rocket powered by liquid oxygen-methane fuel, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, marking a breakthrough in the new low-cost, liquid propellant application for carrier rockets in the country.
Six months later, the world’s largest solid-propellant launch vehicle Gravity-1 made its debut flight from waters off the coast of Haiyang, east China's Shandong Province, on January 11, 2024, showing significant progress in the country’s push to independently innovate commercial launch vehicles. The rocket boasts a take-off weight of about 400 tonnes and a take-off thrust of 600 tonnes, allowing it to lift around 6.5 tonnes of payload to the low Earth orbit, and 4.2 tonnes to the sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 500 km.
China also achieved a feat of developing reusable rockets with the launch of its independently developed Zhuque-3, which successfully completed a 10-kilometer vertical takeoff and landing flight test at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on September 11, 2024. It marked a crucial step towards realizing high-capacity, low-cost, high-frequency and reusable space launches in the future.
The growth of China’s commercial space industry has accelerated over the past few years, with the scale of the market expected to exceed 2.3 trillion yuan (about $326.8 billion) by the end of 2024, up from 1.9 trillion yuan in 2023.
