A huge congrats to ally and friend Mel B on receiving an honorary doctorate for her charity work supporting survivors of domestic abuse! I first met Mel in this photo, at a fundraiser for Women’s Aid after winning my mother’s landmark appeal. Standing in a dark corridor in line for the coat check she called out my name, recognising ME first, which I thought was bloody outrageous given the icon SHE is, but that’s Mel. Engaged, curious and passionate about learning other survivor’s stories. We sat and chatted together for ages, despite a whole room of guests waiting for her. I was blown away by her kindness and generosity of heart. Astounded by just how much she knew of my family’s story, the detail and the depth, far more than most. Mel then asked what change I wanted to see in government, as she was going to meet the then PM, Theresa May. A moment of meeting, listening and learning, and then immediate uplifting of survivor’s voices. That’s Mel. I know I’m not the only survivor to have met and been impacted by Mel, so to see her continuing to excel and grow as a survivor, from pressing Keir Starmer on panels about tackling domestic abuse, to recently going back to university and completing a course in trauma-informed care, it’s incredible to witness. It’s heartening, foremost because of what she endured, and what she battled to survive. The strength of the woman is utterly unrivalled. She is a survivor. As one of many survivors she has come to meet and know I am grateful for her work to create awareness and engage so many on coercive control, economic abuse and bang on about the funding needed by govt to tackle domestic abuse, support survivors and deliver the change we all seek.
