Investment in road infrastructure, especially across rural Kenya, remains central to unlocking grassroots economic growth.
The 10-kilometre Njeri–Oriwo–Border–Pala Road in Karachuonyo Constituency, implemented by Kenya Rural Roads Authority (@KeRRA_Ke), is a clear example under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
Works are well underway, with contractors progressing through base preparation, compaction and already laying the bitumen layer to bring the road to full tarmac standards.
The road will ease the movement of farm produce and fish from Lake Victoria beaches to local markets, cut travel time to schools, health facilities and administrative centres while strengthening last-mile connectivity across the constituency, making rural transport safer, faster and more reliable.
Administrative support has been provided by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, with a strong focus on road safety awareness, enforcement and community sensitization to ensure the infrastructure delivers both mobility and security for all users
Prior to this project, Suba South stood out as one of the few sub-counties in the region without a single continuous national highway network, a stark reminder of years of neglect that left communities, especially along the lake, cut off during heavy rains.
The ongoing construction of the 74-kilometre Mbita–Sindo–Kiabuya–Sori Road is now reversing that reality, opening up the Lake Victoria corridor and restoring mobility, dignity and opportunity to the region.
Managed by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (@KeRRA_Ke), the project traverses Homa Bay and Migori counties, linking Suba North, Suba South and Nyatike constituencies.
Significant progress has been made, with over 17 kilometres already completed to bitumen standards, while active works, including heavy machinery deployment and base-layer preparation, are ongoing across the Sindo and Kiabuya sections.
The road is expected to unlock multiple economic gains. It will ease movement of fish from landing beaches to inland markets, strengthening the Blue Economy; improve access to Ruma National Park, boosting tourism; and streamline cross-border trade between Kenya and Tanzania by reducing transport costs and travel time.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is working closely with local authorities to enforce road safety measures within active construction zones, enhance public awareness and maintain order along the corridor. These efforts are vital in protecting both workers and road users while ensuring smooth project delivery and lasting impact.
