@ArcticEcology That is one possible explanation. Species-specific mechanisms for MeHg/Hg elimination, along with difference in foraging strategy may also play a role. Analysis of potential prey fish will provide us with better insight of the variation exhibited. #ContMarDeb #WSTC4

4 #WSTC4 #ContMarDeb Seabird iso niches show similar resource use. TMF indicates a high biomag. rate of THg in LA. Differences in foraging/breeding strategies may cause diff. in Hg concent. b/w seabirds. Analysis of prey fish will provide more insight to current trends.

3 #WSTC4 #ContMarDeb SIA: Isotopic niches overlap considerably across species. THg: Black skimmers had the highest THg concen. Trophic magnification factors(TMF) represent the avg. rate of biomagnif. per trophic level(Eq.1.). TMF>1 indicates biomagnif. The calculated TMF is 4.6.

2 #WSTC4 #ContMarDeb Seabird carcasses, crabs, & oyster were collected by NRDA after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. To infer foraging niches, muscle tissue underwent C & N stable isotope analysis(SIA) using EA/IRMS. A sub-set of samples were analyzed for Total Hg at SEU.

1 #WSTC4 #ContMarDeb The purpose of this study is to evaluate the relationship of foraging niche & accumulation of mercury(Hg) in 4 species of seabirds in coastal LA. Understanding the trophodynamics of biocontaminants is critical in addressing conservation & management concerns.
