Any questions for @KatieB314? If you do have them, take it away! Please join me in thanking our 6 presenters #WSTC4 #Gentcs@Aukward_Jess @paulisnativi @BeckySTaylor @LilaMayaCN @BronwynHarkness @KatieB314. It is now way past my bedtime (in Oz), good night seabird world!

4/4 #WSTC4 #Gentcs Previously only mtDNA and microsatellites were used to determine genetic structure in LSPs. My MSc project will use higher resolution sequencing, hopefully cover the entire species’ range, and identify putatively adaptive SNPs to aid #conservation of LSPs.

3/4 #WSTC4 #Gentcs I will use #genomic analyses to fully resolve connectivity and differentiation b/w populations across the entire LSP range. I will also identify putatively adaptive SNPs that may be associated with differentiation in morphology, vocalizations, or breeding time

2/4 #WSTC4 #Gentcs A cline is seen in vocalizations and morphology from N to S Pacific, and LSPs on Guadalupe have diverged by breeding time. If there is little gene flow b/w these pops, they may be differentiated enough to assign new management units for conservation.

1/4 #WSTC4 #Gentcs Measuring population connectivity is important for #conservation management of species, such as Leach’s Storm-petrel. LSPs declined by >30% over 3 generations. Currently LSPs consist of 3 species and 2 subspecies, with 2/3 species breeding on Guadalupe, Mexico

Last but not least for the #WSTC4 #Gentcs, @KatieB314 is going to talk about the use of genetics in Leach’s storm petrel to inform conservation. Go when you are ready @KatieB314

Now, these last two guillemots are just begging for questions for @BronwynHarkness! Go for it! #WSTC4 #Gentcs

4 #WSTC4 #Gentcs Results suggested that the most likely scenario was a historical split between the Aleutian Is. and mainland populations prior to the Wisconsin glaciation (0.16 – 0.32 MYA), with mainland populations diverging from each other post-glaciation.

3 #WSTC4 #Gentcs We found significant genetic differentiation between populations, which followed a pattern of isolation by distance. Phylogenetic analyses showed a major genetic disjunction between Aleutian Islands and mainland populations.

2 #WSTC4 #Gentcs We analysed variation in the mitochondrial control region (MCR) and six nuclear markers for 202 pigeon guillemots from 11 sites to assess genetic differentiation and to test whether differentiation has arisen as a result of historical or contemporary processes.

1 #WSTC4 #Gentcs Guillemots experience many potential non-geographic barriers to gene flow, which could result in strong population genetic structure (e.g. breed in small colonies along coastlines, forage / overwinter near breeding colonies, geographic variation in morphology)

Next, what can #Gentcs tell us about population structure in pigeon guillemots (photo: Shanthanu Bhardwaj)? @BronwynHarkness has the answer! #WSTC4

@LilaMayaCN is now going to chat to us about the population genetic differentiation in another gorgeous seabird, the northern fulmar (photo: Andreas Trepte)! Tweet when you ready Lila! #WSTC4 #Gentcs
