“The act entitled ‘an act for the release of certain persons held to service or labor in the District of Columbia,’ has this day been approved and signed.” With these life-altering words, written April 16, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery in the D.C.

DC freed enslaved people 8 months before the Emancipation Proclamation. That liberation was historic and incomplete. 700,000 DC residents still have zero votes in Congress and no protection from federal takeover. The work isn't done until DC is a state.

📜 In 1862, Congress passed the Compensated Emancipation Act, ending slavery in the District. Many newly freed Washingtonians immediately sought #literacy as a path to freedom.
Today, #DCEmancipationDay, we commemorate the District’s important position as the 1st place where enslaved Black people were freed by federal action.
