Conducting concurrent conventional and irregular operations to defeat an aggressor stretches back a for few thousand years (The Peloponnesian War being among the most fertile ground for study). Pericles by @markherman54 from @gmtgames is a fab simulation of that concurrent conventional and irregularoccuring during the Pel War. Song of Wrath by Sarah Raughley is an outstanding read on the subject. @markherman54 recommended War in the Shadows by Robert B. Asprey as great related resource. Consequently, my nose buried in that at the moment.
One of the aspects we are modeling in Defiance (our simulation of initial invasion of Ukraine - the first 6 weeks upcoming from GMT Games), is partisan/SOF operations that choked Russian lines of communications in Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts. We've done that with a VOVK (wolf) mechanic; as Russian units enter towns/woods/cross bridges, Russians are subject to "an occurrence"; a wide range of situations that may result in "friction" to their lines of advance.

One dynamic we're keenly interested in is how Ukraine excelled at using a kernel of troops, enlisting & training citizens in settlement quickly and then executing an effective operation (of course, they've developed a comparative advantage over centuries given their experience with being invaded). There were reports of volunteers being trained in the field to use Javelins (who doesn't go to a YouTube vid to learn to do about anything these days?). Forbes reported on March 8, 2022 that about 300 Javelins were used in the first week. Other antitank weapons in the mix for volunteers included NLAWs, AT4s and MT12s. Some examples here:

Consequently, we simulated these "minutemen/women" occurrences with a unit that pop up, fight and then disperse (usually). Of course, we've also included a number of SOF units to also harass Russian LOCs.

Didn't see any SPAs....maybe 6 Field Arty. May have missed it.
vehicles spaced at about 7.5 seconds each; posture appears to reflect no anticipated resistance. This appears to be a follow on force - which makes sense with what is missing from the formation.
BTG on paper structure at 142 vehicles. We do have a lot of data regarding how understrengthed many Russian units were. This checked in at 82. Is this a motorized rifle battalion? Just part of it (follow on?).

The rules bot ("Tanya") really surprising now and very helpful. Using it instead of rulebook when play testing. And, Tanya likes to give tips on strategy, tactics, etc - that was a surprise - how spot on it was regarding strategy and how we are simulating the conflict...shocking in fact.
Research bot ("Tannie") contains analysis/data were found interesting and/or incorporated into our simulation from sources we are fanboys of. Tannie has been VERY useful in compiling a OOB, gauging unit performance, etc.
Both bots isolated from web. Plan to offer an app including them when we publish, but not associated with publisher; it's a home grown effort.

Interesting article from @wavellroom (quoted tweet below). This line caught my attention: "GMLRS is the only inservice system capable of operating in a GPS denied environment where air power is not available. It has both the range and punch to fight the deep."
Been thinking about how our work (a mate and mine's) regarding designing a simulation of the Russo-Ukrainian War v2022 - ? , Defiance @gmtgames , that reflects experience as a continuation of RMA (Revolution in Military Affairs) first modeled in by @markherman54 in Gulf Strike Victory Games 1983 (40+ years ago!).
Given that Defiance only models the first six weeks of the conflict (Kyiv/Chernihiv campaign) in Volume 1, its applicability to any subsequent conflict (ex: China v Taiwan) , may be limited due to continuing rapid evolution of warfare (ex: AI, bots, etc) and applicable political context. Something we hope to tackle in subsequent volumes if Defiance "works".
