Devadasi is a Sanskrit word that means “Female slave of God”. The Caste Hindu system spread to Tamilnadu, Andhra, Kerala, Telangana, Maharashtra even Gujarat & several other regions over time. The Dalit family of the village here serve their daughter to the Deity of the Temple before they reach puberty. The temple priest performs a ritual marrying them to the deity, after which they are not allowed to marry any person in her life. According to a 2015 report presented to the International Labour Organization by the Bangalore-based NGO Sampark, the total number of Devadasis in India is close to 450000. In 2022 NHRC pulled up six states, Mah, Karnataka, Kerala, TN, Andhra & Telangana. They were asked to submit a report on it. There are 2 stages of becoming Devdasi. 1. Dedication The priest of the temple selects 5/7 (7 in TN, in 2017 report in one event 5 girls were made Devdasi through an event) girls in the pre-puberty stage, age 5-11. After the selection, the minors live in the temple for a fortnight. The girls are forced to remain topless & cover their upper body only with jewellery & flowers till the festival ends. On the last day of the festival women from the girls are asked to carry pots of liquor as an offering to the Deity while they remain topless. 2. Deflowering: The next stage is that of deflowering the girl. The deflowering ceremony is generally conducted after the girl's first menstruation period. While devadasis were originally deflowered by the temple priests, as time passed, they slowly started being sold to the village landlords and rich clients. He would patronize the dedication ceremony & then go on to deflower her - thus effectively completing the process of dedication of the innocent girl and throwing her into a life of forced prostitution. The girl, who is at an age when she is barely able to comprehend the changes of puberty, is forced to have sex with a middle-aged man chosen by her parents. If the client wishes, the devadasi may become his personal concubine & he may or may not forbid her from entertaining other clients. After deflowering her, she then becomes public property. The History of the Devdasi system is full of different theories. But certainly, it was picked during the 7th Century Chola Empire in South India, when the Kings started using Devdasis to meet their lust. As much as I have read I found the legendary Dalit Leader Shivram Janba Kamble (1875- 1940) the disciple of another pioneer of the Dalit movement Gopal Baba Walangkar (1840-1900) who first struggled against this rigorous Devdasi ( Female slave of the God) and Patraj (male servant of Goddess Laxmi) tradition, not any Upper-Class Samaj Sudharak of that time. Still, I know very well most of you have first time hearing the name of these Dalit Leaders. According to activists many thousand girls each year become Devdasi. In Andhra & Telangana 80000 Devdasi & in Karnataka alone, more than 70000 Devdasis live. Proud Caste Hindus get angry & violent when a film shooting is being made in a Temple premise, they find it insulting when an actress wears a saffron colour bikini but is completely mute on the reforms.
