I have been on the waiting list to be accepted into a low-income unit since February 2023. I just found out last week, I qualify for Rental Assistance. I get $436 a month in AISH Benefits. #DumpsterFirePenthouse #DisabledinAlberta

In 2017 I had an epileptic seizure, passed out and hit my forehead against an exposed iron manhole cover. Giving myself a Permanent Frontal Temporal Lobe Brain Injury. Because I was in a common-law relationship, I got no AISH benefits. I got no help at all. #DisabledinAlberta
Across #Canada, love is penalized for those with disabilities. It's already so difficult to find a partner through poverty, ableism, judgement and personal ability.
Love is taxed, any relationship from marriage to common-law gets clawbacks; this can be especially dangerous for people in abusive relationships.
'Gordon is on provincial #disability benefits because she has #fibromyalgia and can no longer work as a massage therapist — and she learned she would risk losing those benefits as soon as she entered a common-law #relationship with her non-disabled partner.
It's a problem that's far too common among people with disabilities and a factor that can lead many to avoid pursuing or entering relationships, say people with disabilities and their advocates.
Woman with disabilities wants change to province's household income policy
"I learned that so many people either just hide that they have a partner altogether or stay single forever because they can't deal with lying," said Gordon, who lives in Victoria.
Right now, a person with a disability can receive up to roughly $1,400 per month in provincial benefits. But if they're married or common law and their non-disabled partner makes net earnings of more than $19,440 per year, the government withholds those benefits as soon as their combined earnings reach that threshold in a calendar year.
Gordon says "this de-incentivizes the disabled person from working because it's collective how much you can earn."'

The government tries to take your dignity on disability support. They try to hurt you, physically and mentally with abusive policies that take away independence instead of encouraging and empowering us.
I won't hold my breath, bu maybe after 6 years I'll receive the care I need for an Acquired Frontal Lobe Injury. #DisabledinAlberta

@CalgaryOccupy 🫂 It's incredibly ironic to me that the Alberta Government aided in my Mental Illness and then denied me any assistance, while Canada claims to be Reconcilling with the Indigenous of this country. #Metis #DisabledinAlberta
Sadness... when your human who has no legs can't even get to the grocery store because it takes over 9 months to get approval for funding for a wheelchair in Alberta. Can someone explain why?
