Have (selfishly) avoided talking about this until now because it’s too upsetting, but check out this thread re information from an FOI request. If you are involved in (or supportive of anyone related to) this awful project, you are part of the problem. #discussionNotDNA
Not even a month after my diagnoses I ended up in hospital due to lack of support #DiscussionNotDNA
#DiscussionNotDNA I wanted to talk but it’s hard when your getting checked on so often. Basically I definitely agree about the family thing how it shouldn’t be compulsory for a diagnoses and some people have their differences in families / don’t have them 2/3
#DiscussionNotDNA I’m trying my best to listen from my hospital bed as that’s what lack of support did to me and here i am 6 months later. I was very lucky that my assessment only took 4/5 months. But leading up to that I had no idea I was autistic. 1/3
It’s so reassuring to listen to this rn - I’m burned out & struggling with words, but thank you all #DiscussionNotDNA https://t.co/ipliRZ2Skk
My school pushed for me to be assessed when I was 6 or 7, but my Mum refused to allow it. She is "against labels".
Made for an awkward conversation when in my 20s my university told me they believed that I had autism and ADHD

Post diagnosis I also got recommended to seek a sensory processing assessment, was told to speak to GP about it. But when I discussed it with GP I was told they couldn't do the referral 🤷♀️
Was all a bit of a saga 😅

I was first diagnosed at 18 after being under CAMHS for 4 years but then over the years my diagnosis has been doubted by multiple MH professionals. And I even had to be 're-diagnosed' because the CAMHS psychiatrist apparently didn't do it right. (1/2)

Not only is support not there for autistic adults, what little there is is actively denied.
I was told I couldn't get support because I couldn't "prove the permanency of my autism" #DiscussionNotDNA

Even when I was diagnosed the school pushed for me not to apply for an EHCP because it was more trouble than its worth (not sure if that's true or not) because I was leaving school that year.

The education system often doesn't support diagnosis of autistics unless they are a 'problem' because if they get diagnosed the school has to provide support which costs money.
"We need to invest more money into real support services for Autistic people.
We need to invest in training professionals on how they can best support the #Autistic community, decided by consulting & led by Autistic people themselves"
An imaginary quote - but very much needed
I'm non-autistic and openly speaking out against the #Spectrum10k study
and I ask all other non-autistic people to inform yourselves about it and the very real & justified concerns the Autistic community have.
Pls see

I forget that non-autistic people have too much to risk to decide to speak out against #Spectrum10K
As if autistic people don't have anything to risk when speaking out against it.
So many autistic academics risking their reputation while non-autistics stand by and watch.
Sometimes posting on Twitter feels like shouting into the void.
I know there is a lot of #ActuallyAutistic people talking at the moment and it's easy to feel like my voice doesn't matter, but I know it does and adding to the #StopSpectrum10K talk is important.

Having found @AutHourPod earlier this week, I've just gone back to start from the beginning. So many involved in supporting #ActuallyAutistic people could learn from the first ten minutes of @EricMGarcia's interview. Another amazing listen!
