New preprint from my team on @researchsquare (https://t.co/lmqQUuxhqo), led by the talented @tielle_gallion (feat. @MNiarchou) looks at the attitudes of autistic adults toward genetic testing for autism (as well as a number of related topics). In general, we found that opinions were extremely varied, with no stance "typical" of the autistic community (i.e., some strong support, some strong opposition, a whole lot of weak support/opposition, many neutral). Some qualitative responses are included in the paper to demonstrate the variety of responses, which were much richer than our quantitative data could capture.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, those that did have more positive beliefs about genetic testing indicated a higher likelihood that they would either pursue autism-related genetic testing for themselves or their (hypothetical) children in the future. Additionally, people who had already received autism-related genetic testing (either clinically or through a research study) tended to have more positive beliefs than those who had not. The majority of respondents also endorsed that certain types of genetic counseling interventions would probably be useful for autistic people (particularly those who are considering or who have already undergone genetic testing). This has clinical implications for the genetic counseling profession, as it demonstrates that there are definitely a subset of autistic people who wish to undergo genetic testing, and genetic counselors could play a meaningful role in the care of those individuals.
I must be missing something here, how can gaining DNA samples help my son to get the support he needs from the wider society? It does appear to me at least, like eugenics.

Honestly, I don't just object to #Spectrum10k's response as an autistic person, but also as someone in medical research. Seriously unprofessional, & not exactly reassuring to prospective trial participants.
If you are an autism researcher, but you can't handle the fact that autistic people may comment on, have opinions on, or criticize your work, then may I calmly but firmly suggest you try researching something else?
@QueerlyAutistic I work in adaptive services where the population is mixed Down syndrome and autism. The abortion rate for Down syndrome since they started testing for it is still around 60-90%. #Spectrum10K
