Can wage growth last and outpace inflation, even as the economy slows? See my piece in Barron's: https://t.co/fgOnSHe9hU
Medellin, Colombia has 100s of powerful gangs, but still went from one of the most violent cities in the world to homicide rates far lower than that of St Louis, Baltimore or Detroit. What happened?
The story here: great success, but at a terrible & hidden price.

I feel every word of this DM. None of us should have to choose between our kids' health and their education. And yet here we are. Especially parents of younger children.

ICYMI: The feud between New York Cityโs yellow cab industry and app-based ride share services seems to be coming to an end with a new deal that would allow taxis to be listed on Uberโs app.

#ECON4All read this @jeannasmialek article to understand current debates in light of the context and history in the use of monetary policy to deal with inflation, and the inherent politics of economic policy.

From the Russian Revolution to Vietnam, war has almost always brought inflation. I explain two ways Russia's invasion of Ukraine will repeat history (disrupted supply, more military spending), and one way it may not. (For that, read to the end.) https://t.co/fOyoL8pROK

Join me @CUNYGCECON on Tuesday afternoon for the next in our weekly online seminar series, when our colleague @paulkrugman will speak about inflation targeting.

If you care about inflation, this is a must read: @sinoceros explains how we get from 7.5% now to 2.5%-4% by December by analyzing the microeconomics of four key components: autos, rent, furniture and energy. https://t.co/i5d6JoYeo9 Graphics by Peter Santilli.

#ECON4All here is a thread on recent developments in the inflation rate, with some discussion of the methods used to calculate the index
Overall consumer prices were up 7.5% in January from a year earlier. The last time inflation was this high over a 12-month period was Feb. 1982, on the way down from the period known as the "Great Inflation."

Tomorrow's jobs report is coming at a crucial moment for the U.S. economy. Too bad it's going to be (in the words of @IrvingSwisher) "a mess." (@DianeSwonk had a choicer word for it, but I couldn't print it!)

Here is a nice thread that requires a bit of economic literacy, the distinction between nominal and "real" values.

U.S. gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, grew by 1.7 percent in the fourth quarter (6.9% on an annualized basis). That makes 2021 the best full year for growth since 1984.

Anyone observing the United States in recent years would see striking contrasts across our economic landscape.
It is understandable that many Americans feel left behind. More and more are expressing their discontent. They are right to do so.
"economics is not a paean to free markets. In fact, much of economics instruction focuses on how markets may produce too much inequality, and how they fail on their own terms of allocating resources efficiently."

We're less than 1% away from a new peak in real GDP. Compare that to the 3+ years it took after the financial crisis. Nominal GDP has already taken out the old high. More in today's special Real Time Economics edition, subscribe here: https://t.co/mc9Poo8ZlU. It's free!

#ECON4All read this @nytopinion arguing that perfect competition is not the normal state of labour markets, a theory thanks to a great female economist, a contemporary of John Maynard Keynes
