The 25th Ministerial Meeting of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (#ESAAMLG) kicked off in Addis Ababa, bringing together representatives from across the region with over 1150 representatives and international partners with the aim to strengthen cooperation in combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
In his opening remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh emphasized the need to build a unified financial control system to ensure sustainable development. He underlined that efforts to prevent criminals from legitimizing money obtained through illicit activities must be pursued through cooperation and joint coordination with international institutions.
Minister of Finance and President of ESAAMLG council of Ministers, Ahmed Shide, for his part, highlighted the challenges posed by cross-border financial crimes and the misuse of technology by criminals. He called for stronger cooperation and accountability mechanisms among member states to effectively combat these threats.
The Director General of Ethiopia’s Financial Security Service, Muluken Amare, noted that Ethiopia, as the current President of ESAAMLG, is actively contributing to regional efforts to curb money laundering and related financial crimes.
