🚨After a disaster strikes, early damage assessments can help save lives, deliver aid, and restore systems.
This is how Japan invests in developing cutting-edge technology to assess damage & take action.

🌧️☀️ Did you know.... flood risk can actually increase after droughts?
Why? Dry, scorched soil becomes solid, unable to absorb heavy rain—leading to surface runoff and flash floods. 🌊
Healthy soil helps prevent floods. 🌱

Resilience begins long before disaster strikes.
Across the world, communities are already feeling the impacts of a changing climate. From prolonged drought in north-eastern Uganda to floods, cyclones and extreme heat elsewhere, the effects of El Niño can quickly turn existing vulnerabilities into humanitarian crises.
That is why investing in preparedness and anticipatory action is so important. By acting on early warnings, our @IFRC network teams can help communities protect lives, livelihoods and essential resources before disasters escalate.
This story highlights how local action, supported by global solidarity, is strengthening resilience where it matters most. https://t.co/pwDu51UdXR
As El Niño increases the threat of flooding, Somali Red Crescent Society teams are helping communities prepare before disaster strikes.
Branches in Burco and Erigavo conducted simulation exercises to test flood response procedures, coordination and early warning systems. The Somali Red Crescent also trained 45 staff and community volunteers, who then reached 8,765 people through door-to-door preparedness and early warning activities.
Preparedness starts before the rains arrive. By acting early, communities can respond faster and more safely.
We convened the National Emergency Coordination Forum (NECF) to conduct an indepth review of ongoing flood response efforts across Nigeria, strengthen inter-agency coordination against emerging public health threats, and harmonise preparedness measures ahead of the anticipated 2026/2027 El Niño phenomenon yesterday.
The meeting brought together key stakeholders from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), security institutions, humanitarian organisations and development partners to assess emerging disaster risks and strengthen coordinated preparedness and response.
Effective disaster management requires a proactive, multisectoral approach anchored on early warning, preparedness, risk reduction, timely response and sustainable recovery.

My thoughts are with everyone affected by the magnitude-7 earthquake that struck Drachen County in Xizang, China, late on 22 October, claiming lives, injuring dozens and damaging hundreds of homes and livestock shelters.
The Red Cross Society of China responded immediately, providing 3,800 essential relief items and supporting the relocation and shelter of affected families.
The @IFRC is in close contact with our National Society colleagues and stands ready to support their response.
Floodwaters from heavy monsoon rains may have receded but needs remain.
@MyanmarRedCross with @IFRC_DREF support has provided shelter, health, livelihood & WASH assistance & will support recovery in the months ahead.

We're headed for an El Niño that is — quite literally — off the charts.
WMO's Global Seasonal Climate Update shows that El Niño is forecast to exceed the scale of global monitoring charts. Its impacts will be felt well into 2027.

📍Somalia | In 2023, El Niño floods affected nearly two million people and displaced more than 500,000. Now, families along the Shabelle and Juba rivers face rising waters once again.
With a potentially record-breaking El Niño feared, @ICRCSomalia_ is working with the Somali Red Crescent Society to help communities prepare early and protect their homes and livelihoods.

🌊🛑 We can't stop tsunamis, but we can prevent disasters.

Flooding along the River Benue has affected 32 villages in Agatu LGA, Benue State, including Oweto and Utugologwu. IOM joined Benue SEMA and the @nrcs_ng on a rapid needs assessment, which found that over 1,000 people across about 200 households have been affected.
Homes, schools and churches have been flooded, two bridges are submerged, and many families are now drinking untreated water. With rice, maize and cassava farms under water, food supplies and incomes are also at risk.
In response, IOM is mobilising relief items from its emergency stock, including mattresses, non-food item kits and mosquito nets, which will be handed over to Benue SEMA for distribution to affected families.
IOM will keep working with government and humanitarian partners to support the response and strengthen flood preparedness in the area.

We cannot wait for floodwaters to rise before acting.
As #ElNiño rains increase flood risks, SRCS (#BishaCas) Burco & Erigavo branches are testing response plans through simulation exercises and taking #earlywarning messages directly to communities.

Millions in Somalia could be at risk as El Niño threatens severe flooding between October and January.
With the Somali Red Crescent, @ICRCSomalia_ is preparing: reinforcing riverbanks, protecting water points, stocking health facilities and training volunteers.

Climate shocks do not affect every community in the same way.
While some areas brace for flooding, parts of Uganda's Karamoja region are already grappling with severe drought linked to El Niño conditions.
With water sources drying up and livelihoods under threat, the @UgandaRedCross is supporting communities through cash assistance, livestock water support, and early action measures designed to reduce the impact of worsening conditions.
Across Africa, preparedness remains one of the strongest tools for protecting lives and livelihoods before a crisis deepens.
