Bummed I couldn't make it to #EditingScientists #SciWri21 yesterday. Definitely going to be checking out the recording!
I like Tamara Poles' idea of providing accessibility ramps and elevators in a building as a way of helping scientists understand non-jargon communication, which is not the same as "dumbing down" the science.

Check out the thread on #EditingScientists we will be discussing this more #GGScholars @NCStateGGIGrad
I was honored to be on this #sciwri21 panel with such skilled pros! Thanks @Monya_science and @hannahh for inviting me. Check out #EditingScientists for highlights. @AmSciMag @SigmaXiCEO @SigmaXiSociety #scicomm
Thanks for all who attended #SciWri21 #EditingScientists, and especially to our insightful panelists @fenellasaunders, @MLemonick and @tadpoles12, and also co-organizer @hannahh
I learned so much from you!

Instead of saying "this way is better for all purposes," explain the edit & show why it's better for your particular audience, says @fenellasaunders.

"By the time you get tapped to be an editor, you know that experts sometimes get it wrong." And it's your job to challenge, says @Monya_Science. Use your journalism background & editorial acumen. #EditingScientists #SciWri21
Sharing Tim Radford's Manifesto for the Simple Scribe can also help scientists begin to understand a writer's perspective (or how to write for non-expert readers). Also, it's delightful. #EditingScientists https://t.co/SHFTOYbm3D
The tricky thing for me is balancing explaining my reasons for edits with not spending too much time on the explaining! That takes a bit of a judgement call. #SciWri21 #EditingScientists
I’ve definitely found explaining edits to be helpful when I edit scientists’ commentaries and opinion essays for @PhysicsMagazine! I try to explain the reasons for edits as much as possible, so scientist writers know I’m not just being arbitrary. #SciWri21 #EditingScientists
Session co-organizer @Monya_science says that explaining the editing process ahead of time—and explaining that her edits are to help the writing be more accessible/comprehensible—helps scientist writers understand the reason for the editing. #SciWri21 #EditingScientists
This session on #EditingScientists is making me feel so much less lonely/crazy/curmudgeonly! Great examples of how to help scientists understand editing, audience, and why can matter as much research (if a tree falls…) #SciWri2021
Oh! I also often ask researchers to talk/write as if they're talking to a good friend from undergrad who does something totally different. Someone they like and respect who knows very little about the researcher's specific discipline. #EditingScientists
Another thing I often mention is that shared language helps to avoid a common problem: If folks don't understand something, that's frustrating (not awful); what's truly bad is when people *think* they understand something - and they're wrong. #EditingScientists
Panelist Tamara Poles had a great analogy for making writing accessible to non-experts (which is NOT “dumbing down” the science!) at the #SciWri21 #EditingScientists session — if you were designing a building, you would include elevators and accessibility ramps, wouldn’t you?
And if the researchers want to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration (which most do - to get grants, if nothing else), they need to find "shared language" which will allow them to communicate clearly across disciplines. 2/2 #EditingScientists
When I'm working with researchers who use the phrase "dumbing it down" (which I loathe), I tell them we're talking to intelligent people who aren't familiar with their specific discipline. 1/2 #EditingScientists
Looking forward to the #SciWri21 #EditingScientists session today!
What the speakers have said so far about communicating to scientists about how they should communicate science to non-scientists is sounding like what I was taught when moving from science to science writing!
