🎬 Gelin size Hollywood filmlerinde kamera ne zaman Meksika’ya, 'Ortadoğu’ya', Güney Asya’ya ya da Afrika’ya dönse ekranın neden aniden tozlu bir sarı tona büründüğünü anlatayım: Sinema literatüründe "Yellow Filter" (Sarı Filtre) olarak bilinen bu uygulama, aslında sadece sanatsal bir tercih değil, modern bir oryantalizm ve sömürgeci bakış açısıdır. Breaking Bad ve Traffic’te Meksika’yı, Extraction ve Slumdog Millionaire’de Hindistan’ı, Black Hawk Down’da Afrika’yı ya da pek çok ajan filminde İstanbul’u ve “Ortadoğu’yu” sanki üzerine sarı bir sis çökmüş gibi görmemiz tesadüf değildir. Bu görsel manipülasyon, Edward Said’in bahsettiği "Öteki"ni inşa etme sürecinin en kestirme yoludur: Batı dünyası parlak ve "soğuk mavi" tonlarla rasyonelliğin, ilerlemenin ve medeniyetin merkezi olarak sunulurken; "Küresel Güney" olarak adlandırılan ve tarih boyunca sömürgeciliğe maruz kalmış coğrafyalar sarı filtreyle boğularak "kaotik, tehlikeli ve durağan" birer suç mahalline indirgenir. Bu durum, kolonyalizmin kurduğu o üstenci görsel hiyerarşiyi her karede yeniden üretir. Sarı ton; kuraklığı, fakirliği ve "eskiyi" sembolize ederek izleyiciye bu bölgelerin modern zamana ait olmadığı ve "ıslah edilmesi gereken, kirli bir geçmişte takılı kaldığı" mesajını bilinçaltından fısıldar. Hikaye anlatma biçimi olarak bu filtreyi seçmek, o coğrafyanın gerçek renklerini ve modern dokusunu yok edip Batılı izleyicinin zihnindeki stereotipleri beslemektir. Insofar as Israel is concerned, it’s been mooted by a number of observers over the years that Israel is on borrowed time, and that eventually the world will awaken to its illegitimacy and its inherently criminal nature, and thereafter respond in kind. At this point in our history such an awakening has never been more urgent. However, try as I might, I’ve not seen a lot of evidence of that. Until now. Which is to say I’m beginning to feel the tide may actually be turning. If not with the bought and paid for political castes in the West, then at a more foundational level. It’s further encouraging that more and more ‘right thinking’ Jews themselves appear to be stepping up and speaking out; though some might argue it’s too little too late, I say better late than never. I noted when I first began writing about Israel several years back that such a shift in the broader Jewish community was not only a necessary precursor for change, but that it might even signal the beginning of the end of Israel if not in fact that of the overarching Zionist project. The enormous tragedy though that so many innocent lives have been lost or shattered will remain, and I believe will haunt Jewish people for a long time to come. At least it will for those Jews of conscience who embrace some measure of genuine remorse for what those whom they've allowed to act and speak on their behalf have perpetrated, and who continue to do so. In the meantime, the world sits on a knife-edge, one that as we speak is still only proverbial.
