@AllisonLaRoy551 When I read this, I thought they had been imprisoned on the island by the stone-eater from the obelisk or the oregene that came to kill them. It would fit that the islands are prisons if very few are aware they exist, but this book is not predictable in some ways #Engl551
I like how Jemisin purposefully uses the term Father Earth instead of Mother Earth when describing nature’s ability to destroy. #engl551

@NoahHazzze @AllisonLaRoy551 I like your theory. The idea that breath generates the life of an ideology killing the earth, while capable of giving life to the plant (like Asha's last scene) could suggest that humans have the power to create or destroy life, and it depends on the path they take. #engl551
As I read, I keep thinking of Atwood's Oryx and Crake and the game "Extinctathon" where you have to guess the names of extinct species. I think that's unrealistic, based on what we see happening now - unfortunately nobody cares about the majority of extinct animals #ENGL551
@NoahHazzze This is interesting. I wonder if red could mean dirt/clay, green mean trees/plant life, and blue mean water. I am reminded of the ppl in MadMax who spray chrome paint on their faces: MadMax ppl like the shininess, could the colors be a displaced desire for nat resources? #engl551
@AllisonLaRoy551 Considering how prominent rape was the night the community burned, I’m sure that is always a side goal to the fires. It seems like the street poor appreciate the pyros Bc they get to loot as well. It’s a weird symbiotic relationship against the “rich” #ENGL551
This is kind of like what Davis was saying in the Malibu article about the suspicion that arsonists were setting fires to get women to come out of their homes in a state of undress. But in POTS, these kinds of fears are real. #ENGL551

@lexi_raikes I kind of took the pliable part in a “using God to justify any sort of action” type direction. The meaning/word of God can be twisted any which way to fit any narrative. Similar to the quote “we shape God” in the beginning of chapter 3. #ENGL551
@Cassidy7788 I think it could definitely be a driving force to want to help people, if not for the sole purpose of helping others but also for helping herself. In this case attempting to bring about radical change to hopefully reduce the numbers of poor and abused people. #ENGL551
@Cassidy7788 I was also interested in the emphasis on space travel. Like the way one character wants to travel to LA, far-off unknown spaces act as symbols of hope. Their hope illustrates the power of fantasy. But it also says they dream of colonization. #engl551
@AllisonLaRoy551 That’s a great observation. I think Bokononism was all about embracing a lie Bc they knew things were meaningless and hopeless. But we see Lauren trying to prepare her community so they can survive. In that way, she’s giving hope and assigning meaning to her life #ENGL551
#ENGL551 In the foreword, N.K. Jemison details that, when reading POTS in her 20s, she found it to be merely « set in the future » compared to Butler’s more overtly science fiction novels. If you have read any of Butler’s other works, how do you compare them to POTS?
What kinds of connections can we make between Parable of the Sower and Cat’s Cradle? I’m already seeing some of the same philosophy of “everything is a lie” from Bokononism appear. Lauren created her own religion, too, although it’s more earnest than Bokononism. #ENGL551

@AllisonLaRoy551 That is really interesting. I also noticed how that section is juxtaposed with the poverty the people of San Lorenzo live in. He suggests American's are not entirely self-conscious. #engl551
I find Angela’s obsession with her father’s image and character extremely sad. She continuously defends him, even after death, while he probably didn’t even remember her name half the time. She seems to be the only child who felt this way, so it makes me question why. #ENGL551
Does Vonnegut suggest that scientific progress has begun exceeding human intelligence and that humans are stuck in a evolutionary lag? Consider Newt and his sisters suggestively deformed growth and Gen Hoenikkers clichés. Could patriarchal science stunt humanitys growth? #engl551

Here's the Small Wonder clip! Again, I'm so bad at this tech, I swear. #Engl551
