Shlock Rock was undoubtedly cultural theft. White artists stole music made by African American artists and changed it to suit conservatives. This stealing and censorship undermines the point of music as a vessel for creativity and expression + hurt the original artists #F22POPMUS
#F22POPMUS Authors considered this music "schlock" because it lacked creativity and individuality. It consisted of songs that were cleaned up and whitewashed without the consent of the original artist. This music can be valued in that it did provide for a different audience.
Ray Charles using a breaking voice signifies raw emotion and originality in his music. The styles of music he uses especially gospel coveys a lot of emotion and these emotions come out in various ways. It could be a shout, a chant or in his case a break in his voice. #F22POPMUS
#F22POPMUS I think that Ray Charles used a "breaking voice" in order to convey emotion in his music. It signifies an attempt at making a more personal connection to his audience by being vulnerable through raw emotion.
@laceyjane1313 Solid point! Many people are forced to buy expensive products, not because they feel a need to 'fit in', but because companies artificially limit options and utilize brand loyalty as a method to make consumers pay more. Bluetooth and adapters mean extra money for them. #F22POPMUS
@zoemcdonald01 One of my favorite features of Spotify is that I can create playlists for people. When Gramps is having a bad day, I put on his playlist. He knows I made it for him and I think he appreciates that. That I pay attention to his music, it is how my family and I bond. #F22POPMUS
The invention of streaming services, ie Spotify, has made nearly all genres/musicians readily available. Im able to listen to Japanese electropop from the early '80s or German punk. My grampy is even amazed by some of the songs they have, some from his early childhood! #F22POPMUS
U3: The new technology has influenced my own identity by expanding and easing my access to music. This has allowed me to align myself with a group of people with like interests. Anyone can listen to and enjoy any type of music nowadays (not limited to class or status).#F22POPMUS
Modern popular music has made drug use seem very normal. Almost every popular song mentions something about drugs or alcohol. Popular songs mentioning these things so often make it seem normal when everybody is listening to these songs. when it is not a normal thing. #F22POPMUS
@MUSjenna It's hard to say that popular music doesn't reflect on our culture in some way—it's popular for a reason. This being said, I agree that no art form is inherently better than another. If someone only wants to be a 'passive listener', their music still holds value. #F22POPMUS
Popular music has certainly created 'false needs' in regards to aspects of popularity, wealth, health, romance, etc. While a lot of popular music is simplified in certain ways, a 'passive audience' isn't necessarily bad—it's its own type of culture and crowd. #F22POPMUS
#F22POPMUS i would argue it is a passive audience for the industry as the music produced often doesn't contain meaningful messages to absorb. The industry's false need is its production of sameness between music singles, where the the latest hit doesn't distinguish from the last.
U1: A false need created by pop music is high social status. Much of the music portrays a luxurious lifestyle of wealth and class that is deemed 'desirable', creating the false need to chase this lifestyle. To the 'passive audience,' this is perceived as an end goal. #F22POPMUS
