@jjcoultas I agree! Concerts are inaccessible, especially to people in rural areas. It is not just the cost of the concert tickets, but travel, hotels, etc. This is not feasible for a lot of people to get a few hours of live music when they can enjoy unlimited music at a low cost #F22POPMUS
@taylorbartlett0 I agree! Most times it is not just the song itself that people enjoy, but the voice of the original artist. It is not worth it to spend so much money on concert tickets to hear a cover band live when you can hear the actual artist on a recording for cheap. #F22POPMUS
I think Wald’s assessment is true. Streaming services allow people to have access to unlimited music at anytime and anywhere for a fraction of the cost. The price, along with the difference in the voice of artists due to autotune, deters people from concerts. #F22POPMUS
@sreid71 I think throughout history there is a clear pattern of white people stealing from African-Americans. If the music was not maliciously stolen, credit would be given to the original creators. The music was not just sampled, they disguised it as their own #F22POPMUS
@Jaylumii I agree, Joseph. To African-Americans, this music was created as a form of self expression. White people stole the music and created a knock-off version that was made specifically to target an audience for fame and riches. It is unoriginal and distasteful #F22POPMUS
It is important to not dismiss Schlock music. Although it is cultural theft, it is important that it is not forgotten so we can ensure history does not repeat itself. Instead, we can learn about the true origin of this music to raise awareness and give proper credit #F22POPMUS
@SheilaLoshi Great point. Today, some of his lyrics, such as “never grumbles or fusses” can be viewed as misogynistic. However, Ray Charles’ breaking voice has a warm, rich texture that expresses his passion for his lyrics. This helps us understand the lyrics were the female norm #F22POPMUS
@Jmdking45 I agree Julianna! Ray Charles’ breaking voice was very unique and allowed him to stand out from other artists. He did not follow a specific genre, instead he put raw emotion into his music, making his music distinguishable and unforgettable. #F22POPMUS
Ray Charles uses a breaking voice to aid in the emotional delivery of his lyrics. True emotion cannot be felt from solely the lyrics. This signifies the importance of the song to him and allows me to understand the meaning of the song on a personal level #F22POPMUS
@AntleColin86 Me too. I enjoy listening to a lot of different genres of music. Online streaming has made this easy as I can sort my music by genre and by one tap I can change from rap to rock #F22POPMUS
@AlexJoy3005 Good point! Online streaming is more accessible than past technology not only by ease of access but also accessibility to more people. At about $10 a month you have unlimited access to music compared to having to buy CD's and a player, which some people couldn't afford #F22POPMUS
Apple Music gives access to music at all times. We are not limited to when and where we can listen to music. We can also create profiles and make playlists of our favourite songs that we can share with others, allowing us to create connections through music taste #F22POPMUS
@mackenziehMUN Great point! I believe the way some pop music portrays hopeless romance is harmful, especially to young people. Pop music normalizes toxic relationships and putting up with toxic behaviour by stressing love is not perfect or easy
@ErinWay14 I agree! Average people may feel they aren’t satisfied with their lives because these songs value materialistic items; taking for granted what is right in front of them, such as true friends, as they chase an unrealistic lifestyle portrayed in pop songs
Pop music creates a false need for drug use, which has become alarmingly normalized. I agree that pop music is a dumbed-down form as the lyrics are often simple with no meaning, but, people can enjoy the music for the beat & not the lyrics, making them non-passive. #F22POPMUS
