On Monday, we convened a joint forum that brought together Faith-Based Organisations (#FBOs) from both Muslim and Christian communities to reflect on Preventing Violent Extremism (#PVE) and emerging peace and security concerns drawn from recent community engagement meetings.
The discussions highlighted critical challenges affecting our communities, including radicalisation, youth mobilisation, political intolerance, and deepening community vulnerabilities. Religious leaders reaffirmed their moral and social mandate to promote peace, using Friday sermons in mosques and Sunday sermons in churches as platforms to nurture unity, dialogue, and non-violence. They also committed to taking a more proactive role in addressing peace-related challenges, including following up on concerns reported to relevant authorities.
A strong emphasis was placed on the need to listen to and better understand young people, raise awareness on existing opportunities such as the Nyota Programme to deter recruitment into violence, and explore sustainable income-generating initiatives within churches and mosques to reduce youth vulnerability to gangs and extremist networks.
Participants further expressed concern over the growing reliance by some elected leaders on private security groups, citing declining confidence in state security institutions as a worrying trend that undermines public trust.
The meeting concluded with the FBOs developing a unified advocacy agenda aimed at engaging both county and national leadership. Key entry points were identified, including the County Commissioner and the Governor, with an immediate follow-up plan agreed upon, beginning with a consultative meeting with the Governor.
