NEW: Today we released a report detailing our impact in 2024 as the independent Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia. First and foremost, we worked to improve public safety in DC by prosecuting our highest rates of juvenile offenses in over six year, working with the Council to pass legislation to reduce youth recidivism, supporting crime victims, funding proven violence prevention programs, defending DC's gun safety laws from legal challenges, shutting down illegal cannabis shops, holding reckless drivers accountable, and enforcing the Nuisance Abatement Act. At a time when DC faces serious budget constraints, OAG delivered over $661 million in savings and benefits of the District — over four times our annual budget. This included over $303 million in civil liability avoided by defending DC from lawsuits, over $198 million in tax revenue preserved, over $77 million in penalties for violations of District law, and millions more in back wages, rent credits, and consumer refunds provided to DC residents. We fought to defend vulnerable workers, tenants, consumers, senior citizens, and our environment in DC from exploitation. This included securing the largest workers' rights settlement in DC history, dismantling a sweeping title insurance kickback scheme, winning back $7.5 million from a predatory home renovation company that targeted seniors, suing a notorious slumlord for horrific housing conditions and other violations, and taking legal action against companies that polluted the Anacostia River. We also showed up consistently to support kids and families in DC. Our ATTEND program helped reduce truancy by 24% for students with families in the program. We successfully placed 132 children from the foster care system with families and distributed $45.4 million in child support payments for children in DC. We sued social media companies that prey on children for profit. And we directed multiple youth leadership, employment, writing, and credible messenger programs to support young people in DC.
