Azerbaijan is a country where no one has hope for a bright future. Even those who serve the system with full loyalty have no trust in it. I have now been unlawfully imprisoned for 133 days on fabricated charges under seven articles of the Criminal Code. For 133 days, I have not been told what I am truly accused of. I am expected to defend myself, yet I do not even know what I am defending against. In this system, fabricating charges, arresting without reason, staging courtroom shows, and handing down unjust verdicts have already become routine. During this time, I have learned that the very investigators conducting this sham case dream of leaving the country, desperately trying to obtain visas to Europe. It is deeply absurd that those who remained in the country despite knowing they could be arrested, those who continued their journalistic work without fear, are now slandered and imprisoned by people who themselves long to escape. Because they have no hope. Perhaps we too belong to the hopeless, yet unlike them, we are the ones who refuse to surrender – and that is why we are now behind barbed wire, imprisoned. Those who justify their crimes under the slogan of “serving the state” should not delude themselves into feeling at ease.
