No wonder they are building tens of thousands more prison places, they intend to keep people in prison, & for longer.
If we want fewer victims of crime, prisons need to become places of healing, education & employment, not of fear, suffering & neglect.

@janellabooks Sadly, punishing abused, traumatised & neglected children, does not heal them.
Shutting them away from the public gaze however at least gives a veneer of civilisation. Behind closed doors the experience is so very, so desperately different.

'We employ ex offenders but not sex offenders' I'm so fed up of hearing that statement in both my personal and professional life!
If we do not rehabilitate and reintegrate ALL offenders back into society, then that doesn't reduce any risk at all!!!

Fortunately, the judge understood his crimes were completely out of character & were driven by tragedy & desperation so sentenced D to a community order.
Part of the order required D to enrol in & engage with a crime diversion scheme.

An interesting discussion thread showing stereotypical views based on subjective feelings of revulsion of the crime & hatred for perpetrators.
Unfortunately exclusion demonstrably increases reoffending.
