Happy #FieldworkFriday! A PNSN field crew headed to the Saddle Mountains in eastern Washington this week to test radio equipment and scope out sites for future seismic stations—and made a detour to admire some lava that hit water 16 million years ago and froze into layered blobs.
It’s #FieldworkFriday! Here’s Barry Glacier calving, not just once but twice, caught on video by Earthquake Center field intern Devin Zigmont! Listen closely 🙉 to hear the cracking of the glacier just before the ice falls. The ice makes an impressive BOOM when it hits the water, which shows up on the seismic record at nearby station BAT. Then the train of waves from the small tsunami 🌊 travel outward, much as they would if a far larger landslide occurred in the fjord--one of the reasons we are monitoring this area.
Today, we’re celebrating the people who make field research happen — the early starts, muddy boots, careful observations, unexpected discoveries and, of course, reaching new heights! 🔎🌱

It’s #FieldworkFriday! Student interns Cade Quigley, Chloe Crossen, and Devin Zigmont took a helicopter to Barry Arm fjord to work on stations BAT and BAE. This area is highly monitored because a slowly slumping wall of the fjord could cause a tsunami if it released all at once. The field team brought fresh batteries for both stations (once the single cloud layer covering BAT moved out). At BAE, they also fixed a wiring issue with the video camera used for visual monitoring of the potential landslide across the way. At BAT they installed a new charge controller. And no, they didn’t bend the metal “mustache” bar across the top of BAE– these sites receive LOTS of snow! In winter, both huts have been covered so that only the antenna is visible! Happy #FieldworkFriday! PNSN field crews recently encountered a friendly deer and friendlier squirrel at @USGS_ShakeAlert -contributing seismic stations EGRN on Evergreen College's campus and FMW on Mt. Fremont–but kept their distance from a black bear & her cubs on the mountain.
It's #FieldworkFriday! The critters were at it again…When our Director of Operations Austin Holland and field engineer Devin Zigmont spotted the open hut door at station G24K from the air, they knew they were in for repairs. 🐻 A bear had torn open the door, ripped up the insulating battery bag, and pulled out cables until it looked like a spilled plate of spaghetti. Then rodents 🐭 followed up by gnawing the insulation on most of the cables, some all the way through to the wires. Troubleshooting is an important field skill, said Holland, “You start with the power system and work your way through.” 🔧 Although it took 2 days, the team brought in new batteries, repaired or switched out cables, installed a new seismometer, replaced the “brain” of the station (the box where the power and data cables connect) and the digitizer. The result…G24K is back online! 🥳
Happy #FieldworkFriday! This week PNSN's field team conducted maintenance at seismic station REDMT on Red Mountain, where smoke from the wildfires in WA and OR filled the horizon. Though the fires have not impacted our network this year, our thoughts are with everyone affected.
Happy #FieldworkFriday! We retrieved our trail cam from Emerald Ridge (RER) last week which took daily photos from September 2023 to January 2025. This insight shows that our extended solar panel plays a vital role, at times being the only thing above the deep snow.
It’s #FieldworkFriday! Making field repairs to our stations requires a wide range of skills, and this year’s visit to D24K also included carpentry! Our station at Happy Valley Camp on the North Slope is close to the Sagavanirktok "Sag" River, an area prone to flooding. When field engineer Celia Chmielowski and field manager Carolyn Parcheta arrived, the lithium batteries in the hut were wet and nonfunctional (you can see the waterline on the interior hut wall). North Slope seismic stations like D24K rely on lots of batteries to function as long as possible into the long, dark winter when solar panels no longer provide enough power.
A waterproof cooler outside the hut protected other lithium batteries, so the team installed a second cooler for new lithium batteries and built a wooden platform in the hut to keep the AGM batteries inside high and dry. While connecting the new power source, “A crazy thunderstorm came up suddenly. The lightning wasn't close enough to be dangerous, but it was pouring rain. Then, as soon as we finished, it stopped raining,” Chmielowski said. With fewer batteries inside the hut, they added rocks to act as ballast to keep the hut anchored in case of future flooding.

It's #FieldworkFriday! Someone had fun taking apart B18K–and it wasn’t the field team! They arrived at this North Slope site to find extensive bear damage: a broken door, wires ripped out, and even several 75-pound batteries tossed 10 feet out of the hut. “It looked like the bear played in there,” said field engineer Shah Khan. “The bear left a calling card–a clump of hair stuck in the clamp.” One layer of batteries, zipped into a heavy-duty protective bag like a huge pizza bag, remained in place. “The batteries generate heat, so maybe the bear found a nice, cozy den for the winter.” Khan and field intern Chloe Crossen repaired the mess and got the station back online!

Technicians upgraded the 20-year-old infrastructure at seismic site LAIR in western Oregon, helping it transmit data faster to support the @USGS_ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System.

It’s #FieldworkFriday! Under the midnight sun,☀️ our field team manager Carolyn Parcheta and undergraduate intern Devin Zigmont worked out of Kotzebue, on Alaska’s western shore (yes, that’s sea ice visible on the horizon!). 🧊 Station H17K had a run-in with a critter…scratch marks on the door were too small for a bear, maybe a wolverine? The culprit yanked cabling out of the seismometer borehole until it found a bag full of soft stuffing that insulated the instrument from surface noise. The field team found the bag shredded and fluff scattered across the site. In addition to cleaning up and repairing the cables, they also added a satellite antenna upgrade and scouted the site for potential future placement of GNSS (high-accuracy GPS) instruments.
Yesterday afternoon's earthquake near North Pole was widely felt through that area and across Fairbanks. This #FieldWorkFriday we shout out nearby station CCB in Clear Creek Butte for capturing its waves!
At magnitude 3.1, it wasn't a destructive quake, but it was a reminder to Interior Alaska residents that we CAN get significant shakers in this part of the state! A little more information:
North Pole seismicity is less well-defined than the Minto or Salcha seismic zones. Yesterday's event was in the same general location as the June 1967 M6 earthquake. This area's seismic activity is challenging scientists to figure out how the area's faults are oriented, and what forces they arise from—it was the focus of a detailed PhD study by recent graduate Nealey Sims. https://t.co/oMNMD4mHJR
