🔗🎮 #OnchainGaming & 💎#Raresats in 2025
Top 3 insights from @ZedZeroth
Last week I took part in the @inscribablexyz Launch Party Space to discuss how we can leverage ordinal infrastructure to create onchain games built entirely on bitcoin & rare satoshis!
Here are my top 3 essential ordinal talking points as we move into 2025:
1️⃣ Onchain Gaming - Why? Inscribing game assets isn't enough. Gameplay needs to take place over the bitcoin network too, ensuring zero-censorship, zero-exclusion, bitcoin-grade security, full decentralization, and immutable immortality.
2️⃣ Onchain Gaming - How? I've spent the last year building experimental collections to showcase fully functional recursive code that allows the following mechanics to take place 100% over the bitcoin network: player-to-ordinal, multiplayer-to-ordinal, blockchain-to-ordinal, ordinal-to-ordinal, player-to-ordinals-to-player, and rare-sat-to-ordinal.
3️⃣ Rare Sats & Satology - In this fascinating emerging asset class, it's essential to understand the different types of rare sats, and how they are produced.
- - -
Let's take a look at each of these concepts in more detail:
1️⃣ Onchain Gaming - Why?
❌ Inscribing a browser-based game as an ordinal lets anyone play it anywhere in the world, BUT the gameplay solely takes place on your computer and does not affect the ordinal permanently.
❌ Using ordinals as in-game assets for online multiplayer games brings real ownership and scarcity dynamics, BUT gameplay is still dependent on a centralized server which will eventually go permanently offline.
✅ True 🔗🎮#OnchainGaming requires both assets and gameplay to be stored on the blockchain. The entire game experience must be native to bitcoin, with the bitcoin network acting as a fully decentralized gaming server. Gameplay is visible in real-time to everyone, everywhere across the Earth. Access comes with bitcoin-grade security, and nobody can censor or exclude players. The game will be playable for as long as bitcoin exists. This is the inevitable future of gaming on bitcoin!
2️⃣ Onchain Gaming - How?
Here's a summary of my onchain gameplay mechanics released so far, how they've been implemented, and how they could be taken further:
👤↔️🤖 Players can interact with their ordinals to modify appearance and send game commands. @Elocremarc, @RabbiGains, @lifofifo & @c12hz each inscribed a variety of basic implementations of this around one year ago. 🌳#BitcoinBonsai took things to a new level by allowing each player to send a complex series of commands to their ordinal in order to design its structure and colors with precision. This "onchain command" mechanic can be extended in all sorts of different directions, effectively allowing the gameplay that you see in traditional video games to take place fully onchain via the ordinal protocol.
👥↔️🤖 🌳#BitcoinBonsai was also the first multiplayer game on ordinals. By inscribing branch nodes onto multiple sats, these can be distributed between friends, giving them each the power to modify the same ordinal. This mechanic brings multiplayer gaming to ordinals, and could be implemented in a huge variety of exciting ways.
🔗➡️🤖 A mechanic I call "chain-syncing" has been present in most of my projects. In a simple sense, this allows ordinals to respond to ongoing bitcoin blockchain activity. For example, season/day/night cycles can be tied to the blockchain, so that environmental effects are synchronized for all players across the planet. 🪷#Flowers4Finney took this further by using bitcoin blockhashes to inject "permanent randomness" into the gameplay. Taking this concept further still, imagine being able to play an ordinal-vs-ordinal battle game that is not fully deterministic. You need randomness to allow some attacks hit and others to miss. Using a browser-based Math.random() command won't help because it will generate different values for every player. The randomness must be created by the blockchain and stored on the blockchain, so that ordinals can determine not only what is happening right now, but also what has happened previously, so that the history of the gameplay can be rebuilt as each ordinal loads. More details here: https://t.co/EqPlSBPw3Z @cryptoni9n @gm7t2 @raphjaph
🤖↔️🤖 First implemented by @lifofifo, and taken to a greater degree of complexity in 🪷#Flowers4Finney, ordinals can be coded to respond to the behavior of other ordinals. In other words, my ordinal responds to my command or to a blockchain event, then your ordinal can detect this change and respond accordingly. The possibilities are endless!
👤↔️👤 Combining the mechanics above, we can effectively created a player-to-ordinal-to-ordinal-to-player chain of causality that allows fully competitive & collaborative multiplayer games to take place between multiple ordinals. This was showcased in 🔗#OnchainChess, where players can command their ordinal to challenge another player's ordinal, who can than accept the challenge to initiate a match. Player moves and player-to-player messages can be sent via the same mechanic during gameplay. Players can then choose to challenge and play against different players. This could be applied to any multiplayer game format, and even extended to create fully onchain messaging, social media, and collaborative design apps.
💎➡️🤖 Finally, ordinals can respond to satoshi rarity in a variety of ways. 🪷#Flowers4Finney respond to the mining of new rare sats, and 💻#Toshi respond to owners "feeding" them rare sats. I foresee different sat rarity tiers becoming forms of in-game currencies as well as items/resources in future onchain games.

3️⃣ Rare Sats & Satology
Beyond onchain gaming, I am also very passionate about rare sats and the ongoing research into this field. The more we understand about how satoshis are created and transacted, the more we can make informed decisions about their future desirability. I recently developed a new classification system, aimed at simplifying the fundamental characteristics that make #RareSats desirable to collectors:
1/ Origins: Position & Age
2/ Intrinsic: Numeric & Alphabet
3/ Journey: Iconic & Inscription
4/ Collectibility: Scarcity & Set
