According to Korea’s founding legend, Dangun, who is said to have descended from Heaven, established the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon (고조선), in 2333 BCE ( a legendary date). It is said that when he founded the nation, he gave his people a guiding principle: Hongik Ingan (홍익인간) “to live for the benefit of all humanity.” No one knows if the story is history or myth, but the remarkable thing is that this ideal still beats in the heart of the Korean people. Today, thousands of years later, Korea, born under that ideal, faces a time when faith and freedom are being tested and amid confusion and persecution, it’s easy to forget our roots, but yet Dangun’s spirit still whispers: “live for the good of all.” Perhaps now is the time to remember that Korea’s true strength has never come from weapons, economy, or technology,but from its collective heart; a heart that believes in Heaven, serves others, and stands united even in the face of injustice.
