“Similar to Cave, the producer Rick Rubin says, "nothing begins with us."
"The more we pay attention, the more we begin to realize that all the work we ever do is a collaboration. It's a collaboration with the art that's come before you” #paidattention #geniussteals
Takeaway:
The rock star Nick Cave has a great newsletter called "The Red Hand Files." In it, he once wrote,
"Theft is the engine of progress, and should be encouraged, even celebrated, provided the stolen idea has been advanced in some way."
All art, Cave says, is mutation and transformation.
Damon Albarn was not the first to hear the “Rock 1” preset on the Suzuki Omnichord. But he was the first to advance, to mutate and transform the "Rock 1" preset.
Similar to Cave, the producer Rick Rubin says, "nothing begins with us."
"The more we pay attention, the more we begin to realize that all the work we ever do is a collaboration. It's a collaboration with the art that's come before you...with the world you're living in. With the experiences you've had. With the tools you use."
One of my favorite examples of this idea that all art is a collaboration:
In 1967, John Lennon bought an 1843 Victorian circus poster for a show "Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite."
With the words on the poster, Lennon then wrote "Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite"—the 7th song on the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album
"Everything in the song is from that poster," Lennon said.

“An ordinary object [can be] elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist.” — Marcel Duchamp

Gorillaz got the "Clint Eastwood" beat from a preset on a 1980s portable electronic music instrument:

Nothing can come from nothing
One can’t invent without inventory
Originality is a myth
The best ideas are created through the dynamic tension of disparate pieces bound together
So we must expose ourselves to the most diverse set of inputs

"Originality is a bourgeois parlour game.
There are no new ideas, there never have been.
There are only new ways of thinking about old ideas and how they’re stitched together." Richard Turley @itsnicethat #geniussteals https://t.co/NWhYuKtm0q

The influence of painting on cinema, a short thread.
Starting with;
The Fifth Element Luc Besson (1997)
The Broken Column, Frida Kahlo (1944)

Even the great David Ogilvy occasionally sought inspiration from the work of others. #GeniusSteals

“Nothing can ever come out of nothing.
Apply this truth to writing and we all understand that a book is the product of its time and its writing draws on everything that has gone before it that makes books and writing possible” #geniussteals
How culture gets distilled into books which then affect the way we think about the world and ourselves in it. https://t.co/3TQrCBOhXX
“It comes from really well-stocked minds,” she says. “You need huge amounts of knowledge and a gigantic database in your mind. The notion that it’s something out of nothing is complete tosh." #geniussteals https://t.co/sX5R9dsIl6 via @campaignmag
I am so stealing this idea for a project at work. Not verbatim, clearly, but the idea of turning a piece of equipment into something more universal. #geniussteals
Great copywriting is often taking something too far and finding out it’s just far enough.

"From a musical&historical perspective, the practice of copying baselines from earlier work to create new compositions is the foundation of how Western music was written, taught & developed" #geniussteals #cantusfirmus https://t.co/1w9monnOTR
“So culture is both a freewheeling world where anyone steals anything from anyone – everything is a remix – and it has rules about who can copy what” #geniussteals https://t.co/6NvhJFO3C9
Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing"
