#Andreas #Gruentzig performed the first success percutaneous transluminal #coronary #angioplasty (known as PTCA or percutaneous coronary intervention (#PCI)) on a human
on September 16, 1977
at University Hospital, Zurich.
Patients are central! In the early days of angioplasty, inventor Andreas Gruentzig was always a patient advocate, as Dr. Hartzler states. #Gruentzig himself discusses this in my 1985 interview. FYI this was pre-stent, so a complication often meant emergency CABG. #AngioHistory
ICYMI: As Dr. Geoffrey Hartzler says in this video clip, Andreas #Gruentzig was always thinking about the patient. Gruentzig himself addresses these issues in my 1985 interview with him. Remember this was pre-stent, so a serious complication meant emergency CABG. #AngioHistory

#MeetTheLegend nice evening with the pioneer Pr Jean Marco and her wife. Stories about the first steps of #Angiopasty #Gruentzig #SpencerKing
“It’s easy to be a hero doing a lot of dilatations… If you wanna be hero you’d better be it also in the follow up.”
Ever timely teaching. #Gruentzig

In my 1985 interview with Andreas #Gruentzig, inventor of coronary angioplasty, he discusses complications, which before stents often meant emergency CABG. But his concern for patients continues to have meaning for today's interventional cardiologist. #AngioHistory

Lots of interest in this clip over the past few days. Almost 8,000 views! The most popular video we've posted in a while. #AngioHistory informs the present day. #Gruentzig #CTO
@Hragy .@Hragy - Gruentzig talked about CTOs in our last interview in 1985, one month before his tragic passing. As with most things, he was focused on the problem, its implications for the future of the procedure & directions for solving it. #AngioHistory #CTO
@drmilicaa @rafavidalperez @Steph_Achenbach @PabloJ @escardio @ESC_Lavinia @CVandenbriele @MihaiTrofenciuc @ACVCPresident @HanCardiomd Just chiming in with some #AngioHistory: Andreas #Gruentzig, who totally revolutionized the field of cardiology, was not a cardiologist to start but an angiologist. He developed his balloon during peripheral cases. Only later did he move to cardiology.
In the late 1960s, #Gruentzig learned of the angioplasty procedure developed by Charles Dotter. Encountering resistance in Germany to his exploration of technique, he moved to Switzerland. Gruentzig's first successful coronary angioplasty treatment on human was performed in 1977.

The photo, taken in August 1980 at the #University of #Zurich, shows, among others, four pioneers of interventional #cardiology while participating in an #angioplasty meeting: M. #Sones, C.T #Dotter, M.P. #Judkins and A. #Gruentzig.

Dr. #Gruentzig's US Patent application for his balloon angioplasty catheter, #1980. Interesting, looks like an 8 mm balloon diameter. Love his nuanced description of cath technique. #iRad #Cardiology @angioplastyorg Credit: https://t.co/Xc96MW4nH3
